This week I have several Peter Rabbit themed activities to share with you. Today’s activity is a preschool counting and number recognition. It features a free printable counting mat. Children will have fun roll dice to find out how many buttons they will place on Peter Rabbit’s blue coat.

Before exploring this activity, you will want to read your children the book Peter Rabbit. They may have recently seen the movie Peter Rabbit, but I think they will enjoy reading the original Beatrix Potter version of The Tale of Peter Rabbit.
Getting Ready for the Peter Rabbit Counting Activity
You will need to print out a copy of the Counting the Buttons on Peter Rabbit’s Jacket. It was designed to be printed out on a color printer.
Then you will need to gather groups ofbuttons and two dice for each child. Peter Rabbit hadbrass buttonson his jacket, but you can use any type of buttons for this activity. We used a collection of white buttons we had at our house. You can use number diceor dice with dots on them for this activity. Younger children may prefer to used dice with dots on them that they can count.
Peter Rabbit Counting Activity
Children will need to roll one or two die to find out what number of buttons they will need to put on Peter Rabbit’s jacket. Then they will need to count out that number of buttons from the collection of buttons you have given them. Next, they will need to arrange the buttons on the blue jacket. Finally, children will count the buttons by touching them and saying the number they represent out loud.
Children can repeat the steps above as many times as you or they want to. Some children may get tired of counting while others want to roll and count over and over again.
If you like this rabbit activity, here some more you will love.
