This water density with grapes worksheet walks children through the scientific method. Your children will need to fill in the blanks in some areas of the worksheet. Other areas have enough space for children to write out their insights and conclusions.
The directions for conducting the density experiment on the worksheet. Pictures showing how we conducted the experiment are available on the Do Grapes Sink or Float? Sugar Density Experiment post.
Getting Scientific Method Water Density Worksheet
You can download your free copy of the Using the Scientific Method to Explore Water Density with Grapes Worksheet. Then you can open it with Acrobat Reader.
Once you have opened the PDF, you can print out as many copies of the worksheet as you like.
Conducting the Water Density Experiment
Your children will want to start the experiment by conducting research. They will research whether grapes really do sink when they are placed in water.
Then your children will need to add 2 0r 3 tablespoons of sugar to the water cup. (The sugar will need to be stirred into the water.) Your children will need to record the number of tablespoons they have added in the analysis section of the worksheet.
Next, they will need to drop a grape into the cup. Children will need to observe what happens to the grape. They will then draw a picture of where the grape ended up in the cup.
They will repeat the steps of adding sugar, dropping in a grape and drawing a picture of where the grape ended up. Each time they should add 2 or 3 tablespoons of sugar.
After adding 6 to 9 tablespoons of sugar the grape should float up near the top of the cup.
Helping Your Children Draw Conclusions
The last step in the scientific method your children will explore is drawing conclusions. Your children may need your help in forming a conclusion. They may benefit from having you help them brainstorm what to write down.
