It will be fun to see just how many snowmen your children can build! This set of winter STEM challenge cards pictures blocks your children will need to use to build each snowman. Your children will be able to build almost all of the snowmen with some creative thinking.
This STEM challenge will require children to think about various ways each shape can be stacked. Children will need to decide which shapes need to be placed at the bottom of the three block stack to give the stack a strong foundation. Your children will need to place the blocks that move on the top.
Before starting this Winter STEM Challenge, you may want to read your children some books about snowmen. Below you will find some of my favorite snowman-themed books.

Getting the Winter STEM Challenge Activity Ready
Getting the Cards Ready
First, you will need to download the Snowman STEM Building Challenge Cards set.
Next, you will need to decide if you want them printed in black and white or color.
Then you will need to cut out the cards on each sheet.
Finally, you will need to decide if you want to cover the cards with plastic so you can use them over and over again.
Building Supplies
You will need a set of wooden or plastic blocks for each of your children to use. You will need to make sure that they get a circle, 3 squares, 3 rectangles, and 3 triangles.
Ways to Explore the Winter STEM Exploration
You can have your children do the building activity a number of ways.
First, you can have them work in a group to try to build the same challenge.
Second, you could place the blocks and cards in a center for them to build on their own or with a partner.
Third, you could work with your children one on one to complete the challenge.
You will want to have your children walk you through their thoughts on why the block combination works or doesn’t work. You won’t want to skip this step. Having kids share verbally what they have tried will help them place this understanding in their visual and auditory memory.
