Vowel sorts are a great way to explore words. This activity was designed to be done in a file folder. However, you can set up this activity any way your like. Let me walk you through the basics of setting up the vowel sort as I imagined it. After you have read them, you can decide what you want to do.
Downloading the Vowel Sort Set
First, you will need to download the set.
Second, if you don’t have Acrobat Reader you will need to download it. The algorithm page is an Acrobat Reader PDF file.
Third, you will need to go to your download file and open the page. You may be asked if you want the file to open right after you download it. If you are, you won’t have to hunt for it in your download file.
Getting the Activity Ready for Your Children
After you have downloaded the set, you will need to print out the birdhouse page and word card pages. When you have the birdhouse page, you will need to decide if you want to glue the birdhouse page to the top of the inside of a folder. If you would prefer to cut out the birdhouses before gluing them in the file folder, that would be fine too. It will eliminate the white background from the birdhouses.
Next, you will need to cut out the word cards. It would be a good idea to print out the word cards on cardstock. If you plan on using the cards over and over again you may want to laminate them. Below you will find some laminating supplies I recommend.

Exploring the Vowel Sort
Before your children start sorting the words, you will need to make sure that they can read the words on the cards. Children may also need to have you review what makes vowels make long and short sounds.
The file folder activity can be done with a partner in a center or on their own. If you choose to have them work on their own, you may want to share with them a way to have their work checked. They can read their words to a friend, show you their word piles, or have them write down the words in groups.
