In honor of President’s Day JDaniel had a George Washington lunch. Allegedly George Washington chopped down a cherry tree as a young boy. It was fun to try and come up with foods that had cherries or would relate to George’s tree experience.
The first items in the tin are turkey sandwiches. George probably hunted for turkeys on his various properties. I haven’t read anywhere that they were a particular favorite of his. I do know that Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national symbol of our country. JDaniel has made the turkey sandwich his personal favorite for lunch.
The second cup contains broccoli trees and cherry tomatoes for dipping in the blue cheese dipping sauce. I mentioned the fact that George likes to chop down trees or is remembered for chopping down a tree. JDaniel has a special fondness for trees but, didn’t want anything to do with these. He ate all the tomatoes and the dip though.
The third cup contains cherry jello. It came out a little soupy this time. I am not sure what I did wrong, but it had enough clumps it that JDaniel thought it looked like jello and wanted to eat it.
The last cup on the second row contains JDaniel’s favorite part of the meal. I made biscuits and put cherry filling over one for him. I guess you could call it a cherry biscuit cake. It disappeared as soon as the tin hit the table so, I guess you could call it the disappearing cherry biscuit cake.
A very symbolic tin! Excellent 🙂
I love the cherry items!
Ahhh, very clever and thoughtful!
I’m glad the jello was good enough to eat. 🙂
I have a cherry cream cheese dessert that I LOVE!!!
Mmm, I’d like that cherry biscuit cake!
My 5 older daycare kids would love if I did the muffin tins with them for lunch, but I’m afraid it would be a lot of work???? I love this idea though.
My favorite cherry food is actually a drink. When we vacationed in Estes Park a few years ago there was a cherry store that we stopped at. They had homemade cherry juice that was delicious! I’d go back just to get some of that!
This is so creative and makes me want to make my kids a cute little lunch and makes me want some cherry cobbler. Yum.
Like JDaniel, my daughter will not touch broccoli, regardless of WHAT you call it. Unlike him, she will also not eat tomatoes. Sigh. She would love both the cherry desserts though!
Sugar Mama – it’s only as much work as you make it. You can do very involved things, but even if you just bung their regular snack in a muffin tin, they love it for the novelty of it!
Oh and my favourite cherry food? Cherries. Really, just fresh cherries. YUM.
CHERRY TOMATOES???? Why didn’t I think of that?? I used Cherry Fruit Salad in a can, not nearly as healthy!!! Great IDEAS!
What a great themed tin for the holiday!
I would have eaten this disappearing cherry biscuit cake first too! And I would have left the “trees”! How creative!
Fun! Ditto that Cherry tomatoes are genius!
I think I like straight-up cherries from the farm stand the best!
Cherry cheesecake, for sure!
About the broccoli…at least you tried. I believe in at least offering new or healthy things to my kids. If they eat it, great. If not, oh well. At least they had the chance.
Such a cute tin … I am not the biggest fan of cherries … I love them fresh off the tree and that is it!!! But you sure make them look cute!
you rock,
what a fun lunch in honoring president’s day.
best regards.
What a cute idea!
My favorite recipe is take a can of cherry pie filling and pour it in a pan, then add a brownie mix (prepared as box says) and bake until down. Serve warm with whpped cream!
Yum! Now I am hungry!
Very cute muffin tin – Keree loves anything cherry, so we will have to try a biscuit with cherry toppping.
I love the idea of a George Washington lunch for Presidents’ Day or whenever anyone is studying presidents! I’ve been adding to my list of president posts in the Living Montessori Now Blog Frog community since last Friday. I just added yours at http://livingmontessorinow.com/community/#/1378313/forum/81154/how-are-you-celebrating-presidents’-day-weekend.html
Such a cute idea! I love the muffin tin as a serving tray too!
