“JDaniel, we are going to wait a few weeks until after Thanksgiving.”
“The stores have theirs up!”
I am not sure why Christmas things go up as soon as the Halloween displays come down. I love to celebrate Thanksgiving and then get ready for Christmas, but I found Christmas sneaking in earlier and earlier this year.
We had a wonderful time with my husband’s family at Calloway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Georgia over the Thanksgiving holidays. Christmas was everywhere there. There was a lovely holiday light display that we rode through on Thanksgiving Day. The lobby of the lodge we stayed in had a beautiful tree decorating its lobby. We exchange Naughty Santa gifts while our little ones played with toys their Nana has given them for Christmas. (We only see all my husband’s siblings and their families once a year at Thanksgiving so, we always end up celebrating Christmas during Thanksgiving with them.)
When we came home, our street had Christmas lights guiding us down to our undecorated home. After we went to church today and watched the first Advent candle been lit, we came home and took out a few things. We had planned to hang wreaths outside today, but it was too windy and cold. Maybe next weekend will be warm and our house will begin to look a little bit ready for Christmas until then I am still stuffed from Thanksgiving.
When do you start decorating for Christmas?

Stores here had Halloween and Christmas displays right next to each other this year! It is just crazy and Thanksgiving gets totally lost in the mix. Which is a shame because Thanksgiving is actually my favorite holiday.
We have a Christmas tree up now mainly because we wanted to see if all the lights were working (they aren’t) but it isn’t decorate yet because my dad will be giving us another one this weekend and then we will see which one will be the main tree. I will start pulling out the snowmen tomorrow and then things will really start to look like winter here 🙂

Now that I’m retired and no grandkids to come and visit..I don’t really decorate..It’s been kind of nice the last few years.. No decorations to take down after Christmas.
BUT this year Ben is older (4) and he is all excited about Christmas.. So the tree will be coming out soon and the train board will go under the tree and Grampa Dee Dee will have to set up his train for Ben to run. Isn’t it something what we do for our grandchildren? I love Christmas ~!

We don’t usually do it until December. However, last year it was 17 degrees and my husband said he would never do it again when it was that cold. So this year we did it early when we had a warm weekend. However, we didn’t turn on the lights until advent started.

Stumble!
I find that things are going up too early around here. We are planning to put our stuff up next week for the kids’ sake. Found you through Stumble Tumble Tuesday.

We usually start within a week or two after Thanksgiving. This year we decorated the weekend after Thanksgiving because we’re having Georgia’s birthday party this coming weekend, and the Christmas decorations work for her party decor as well. We don’t do anything Christmas related until after Thanksgiving is over.

I couldn’t agree more. It seems the season just gets so rushed (even before Thanksgiving there was holiday music playing!) We usually put out our decorations after Thanksgiving and the tree will go up next weekend.

I totally agree. I noticed here that there were even hints of Halloween a month prior, then it seemed Christmas just started appearing even before Halloween was done and over. My favorite radio station started playing Christmas music a week after Halloween, now that is all that is on that station.

I like to wait until December. 🙂

Thanks for commenting on my blog. We’ve always waited until after Thanksgiving to decorate for Christmas, but the past few years my husband has insisted on the weekend before Thanksgiving. But I don’t mind really. We got the tree up, but we still have some other decorations to put up, so I guess it’s more of a gradual thing for us.

I wait for after Thanksgiving!
I love how Thanksgiving is the only holiday that has not become commercialized…it is still in pure form…a day to show Gratitude for ALL we have! =)

I like your post inviting us to comment! I usually wait until after Thanksgiving to put anything Christmas-like up but I must confess the Christmas music comes out after Halloween! Yikes! I really really enjoy the music. So we’ll probably decorate this week/week end. Here it’s been rainy and cold, today it turned sleety. Yuck! Don’t want to set up lights in that. Have fun decorating!

Oh my goodness!! I went to Calloway Gardens as a kid with my parents! I still remember that vaca vividly! We stayed in some little cabin/cottage and took part in the week-long kids camp. It was SO fun!

I used to wait and do it about a week into December but for the past few years I’ve been doing it right after Thanksgiving. And I was just telling my husband the other night that it does seem that most people are decorating so much earlier now than they did when we were kids. He thinks it has something to do with the improved quality of the lights. Hmm..

Ha! That is so true. I found myself saying “I’m not listening” when I walked through the stores before Xmas and they were playing Xmas music. If I will be in town for the holidays and usually decorate the weekend of Thanksgiving, just because I have that long weekend. But that’s an awful long time to have decorations up so usually they come down the day after Xmas…once even the night of.

Oh, no support on this one from us over here. Our trees go up before Halloween every year. 🙂

Sooo true. Here we are not even a week after Thanksgiving and I’m feeling guilty I haven’t hauled out the Christmas Decorations yet…Guess what I’m doing today!

Well, the tree is finally in and upright. It had been sitting in water outside since Friday. Don’t know when the lights will be on? We have done our advent the last three nights…we try to do it every night. That has become one of our best traditions.

We’re with you on the waiting for Christmas decorations.
It’s funny – when we walked into Target the day after Halloween, my daughter marveled, “they’re skipping Thanksgiving” because the store was already decorated for Christmas.

Our 1028 sq ft condo is kinda small and all we have is a ready-to-go less than 3ft tall fibre optic tree that needs no decoration!

We were out the Monday after Halloween and there were so many Christmas decorations in the store that my 2 year old asked me, “It Christmastime mommy?” We’ve started putting up a few decorations and we are going to attempt the tree this weekend. Just hope my 10 month old doesn’t pull it down!
Valerie says
I agree, when it starts too early, by the time Christmas rolls around, we’re sick of it.
We wait until December sometime.

We’re decorating today! I so love this time of year. Advent prepares me to end the old year and start my new year off thinking about what’s really important.
