Back to School Traditions- His Return to School

This year he was a little nervous about going in and he asked if he could wait until next time to go all the way in. He just couldn’t help it walking away from me though. His new classroom is decorated in a puppy dog theme and he just had to head in and look them all over again.

We went to the Back to School Open House and met his wonderful teachers last Friday.  They are going to keep him hopping.  Both are no nonsense very loving ladies who are super organized.  They even gave us homework to do over the weekend.  I had paperwork to fill out on his interests and fears. JDaniel had to decorate a poster board dog with his favorite things. 
JDaniel is one of three Daniel’s in his class. In school he is known as Daniel so, he has been a little worried that he won’t know which Daniel the teachers are talking too. 
When we came home from the open house, I had a special lunch for him featuring his preschool’s mascot. He announced that it was very cute, but that it shouldn’t have prunes on it. “Prunes don’t do good things to me,” he said.  
He is very happy about being in school so he can see new friend and make new ones.  We had trouble keeping up with some of his old friends over the summer. Everyone’s summer was filled with trip, camps, and swimming lessons.

I am really excited for him. He has been so excited about learning sight words this summer and starting to write. Jdaniel is going to really bloom this year in school. I can just feel his learning roots growing.
While I am excited about the time he is going to be at school learning, playing and making new friends, I wasn’t ready to send to school for five days.
 Many of his friends from last year are in five day class.  JDaniel will just be going for three.  I am so glad my husband  and both agreed this was best for all of us.
I so love being with him and know I will be enjoying this final year with him. It has felt like we have flown through this chapter of our lives together. The Being Home chapter has only a few more pages left in it. Those pages will be truly cherished and some may be tear stained.
Next year he will go to school for five days and hopefully I will be teaching school five days. I will be using some of the time he is school this year to update my resume and take some teaching courses.
His teachers asked what I am hoping for this year. Well, here is my answer. I  am looking into this new school year with great expectations of his learning new things, growing new friendships,  and  making memories to carry with him.

  2. It’s exciting when they start school, even if it pulls at your heartstrings. I remember those days well, although my “boys” are 38, 39, znd 40! Cherish the time…it does fly by!

  3. I love those photos where my girls backpacks are as big as they are.
    I think that you and JDaniel are both headed into a great year. You will both have your own time and can come back together to share and capture as many memories as you can before the big shift in your lives next year. Enjoy every minute of it…just no more prunes 😉

  7. He is such a big boy! My son was one of the only kiddos that did not go to preschool 5 days a week. Those days at home are precious. Now that my son is a big 1st grader, I miss him when he is gone 5 days a week.

  10. I can understand your wanting to stick with three days. With my youngest, I never sent him to preschool or pre-K at all. I just couldn’t bring myself to do it!

  13. C is going only 3 days too. It’s been an adjustment but we’re getting there. So, glad your guy is excited and off to a good start.

  14. That lunch is great! My 4 year old is going to start preschool 5 afternoons a week. I am really going to miss him. I get an actual stomach ache thinking of him starting kinder next year, 5 days all day long. I will be so happy for him and he’s already unbelievably excited but talk about tear-stained….

  16. we went ahead and put him in 4 days… he goes 9-1, well, actually 9 – 12:50. He loves it… and i miss him (is it weird i have cried leaving him each morning? not in front of him.. but as i pull out of the parking lot.. lol, i was fine until we tried carpool.)
    the time really does go by fast…

  18. I love that picture of him with his backpack. So incredibly sweet and just makes me smile. And the prune comment made me laugh out loud! haha. His teachers sound awesome and who wouldn’t want to go check out all of those puppies!
