It was too easy I told him after reading the books to look at someone and judge who they were by what they wore or the color of their skin or their bodily imperfections. Who was Martin Luther King? He was a man that wanted us to look deep inside people and get to know them for who they were.
During his time I told him, people were really mean to people they didn’t know just because they judge them base on color. JDaniel was surprised. He hasn’t been around people that say the horrible things that can be said about others yet. I hope that he will look back at who Martin Luther King was and try to be like him.
Making a Who was Martin Luther King? Lunch
I made a lunch and a snack with a peace theme to represent the peace that Martin Luther King talked about. The lunch above featured a slice of bread with a tan dove place in white bread. It also includes turkey and cheese doves that can be placed on the sandwich or eaten separately. Finally, I placed a rainbow fruit salad in the upper left-hand corners compartment to represent the fact that our world is made of a people that are a rainbow of colors.

What a wonderful lesson to teach him. It’s sweet how innocent he still is since he was surprised at how people could be mean.
Awesome! Only you could make a lunch out of Martin Luther King! 😉
Cute lunch! Yes, we just had this discussion.
Great lesson. Love their lunch 🙂
What a wonderful way to teach him about Martin Luther King. Love how you incorporated his message of peace in his lunch!
What a great way to incorporate the day at a child’s level! Very creative. You must be a wonderful parent!
I love the sandwich in shape of a dove and what the rainbow fruit salad represents! What a great idea!

How amazing! You find something for every occassion and then some!

Deirdre,
You are so creative!
Yes, it is a great lesson to learn and to live by!
I love how creative and imaginative you are!
What a wonderful lunch idea! It sounds like you did great telling him about Martin Luther King Jr. My children learned a lot at school last week and we had a number of discussions about him. They were very interested and excited to learn about him and the day and what it all means.
You never fail to amaze me.
Peace… yes. Beautiful and significant lesson for all…
I find myself wanting to eat that lunch.
=)
WE had fruit today for lunch too! We had apple “sandwiches” where apple slices are the bread and you top with whatever. Looks delish!
What a wonderful way to celebrate MLK 🙂 I thought you might be interested in a giveaway I’m hosting for BluApple 🙂 http://www.domesticsweetheart.blogspot.com/2013/01/bluapple-review-giveaway.html
P.S. I’m also a new GFC follower 🙂
This is an awesome way to explain MLK. Anna learned enough about him in school and said today during Inauguration ceremony, “Mama, Dr King’s dream came true. Look, the President is black!” Too funny that she didn’t notice it before.
I love this meal! The brown bread inside the the white bread is so cool – I might have to steal that idea for one of my muffin tin meals!!
Any time double bread is involved, I’m on board!!
love that you are sharing the way people NEED TO BE with him…
and love the plate 🙂
What a fantastic way to teach about Martin Luther King.
Love the dove & rainbow! Great lesson!
