This is the second of three Good Night, Gorilla themed activities I am sharing this week. On Monday I shared an egg carton gorilla craft. Today I have a free algorithm coding worksheet to share with you. On Friday I have a set of math worksheets to share with you.

Before you start this activity with your children, you will want to read them the bookGood Night, Gorilla (Picture Puffin Books) and explain to them what an algorithm is. I tell my students that algorithm is a word used by computer coders. It means the series of steps needed to complete a task.
Let’s Get Start with the Goodnight, Gorilla Algorithm
The first thing you will need to do is print out a copy of the Good Night Gorilla Algorithm Worksheet for each of your children.
Children will complete this algorithm by drawing arrows to connect the animals in the order they got of their cages at the zoo. They will start by deciding how to connect the box with the zookeeper in it to the box with the gorilla. Your children will find more than one way to connect the boxes. The most obvious way to move up from the zookeeper to the gorilla. It also uses the fewest number of steps. Children can draw an arrow beside the zookeeper in his box. Then they can draw an arrow in each of the boxes between the zookeeper and the gorilla.
Then they will need to move from the gorilla box to the elephant. They will probably decide to draw an up arrow in the gorilla box and an arrow pointing to the right in the box above the gorilla.
Children will continue drawing arrows in the animal’s boxes and the boxes around them to connect them to the next animal. After they have reached the armadillo. They can draw a series of arrows to connect it to the word End.
If you like the idea of using children’s books to teach algorithms, here are some more you will want to explore.
