The Hour of Code Week is the first week in December. Children around the world work on completely coding activities online. When they have completed a set of activities. they are sometimes offered an Hour of Code certificate to print out. Due to the fact that a large number of people participating, some of the sites turn off areas of their sites that record your children progress. So, when a child goes back to finish the activities they ran out of time to do there isn’t a record of their being there.
The students in my classes work on the Hour of Code online the last week in November. If they haven’t finished, we work on them right before Christmas. They work offline of coding activities during the week of the Hour of Code. Below you will find a few of the offline coding activities we have done and some that were created by others.
Connecting Events to Create an Algorithm
An algorithm is the series of steps needed to complete a task. A computer needs to follow an algorithm to complete a function or task that it is being asked to do. The worksheets below invite children to connect the events in a children’s book in the correct order.

Drawing an Illustration Based on an Algorithm
Children will have fun following the steps shared on Blockly Blocks to create an illustration. Blocky Blocks are coding pieces that can be put together to create an algorithm. Children start with the direction of the first block. Next, they will work their way through the steps on the blocks in the center. Finally, they will create a background for their illustration.
