Coloring with dyed ice cubes in a roasting pan is a great way to work on blending colors and experimenting with them. Ice cube rainbow painting is an activity that does just that. This idea popped into my head last week and I really wanted to try it.
Sometimes when you get a great idea like ice cube rainbow painting, turns out better than you imagined. Other times you try it out and it just doesn’t work. I mean it turns into an outrageous mess.
The kind of mess that stays with you all day. I have made colored ice cubes before and haven’t had it be a huge mess, but this time it really didn’t work well.

Why Color for Kids with Ice Cubes was Messy?
We will do this coloring for kids experiment again! It really is a great idea! This time maybe it won’t be an outrageous mess. This time it will be a solidly froze idea that melts elegantly into pools of color. Coloring ice cubes for my kid and having them ice cube rainbow paint really will be fun! ( Cross your fingers and say a prayer!)

I can just picture what your hands looked like! We’ve had quite a few that didn’t work, too. It’s all part of the fun (or so I tell my kids).
hehe I love his “they are so colorful” statement!! I love to hear one some people’s projects flop.. not because I like to see people fail but to know that sometimes things turn out just like they do at my house! 🙂
I also flopped with the color ice cubes once and we were in the bath tub with them. I remember saying ok let’s hurry up and get out because I was imagining his skin turning rainbow colors. I think the amount of food coloring might have a role in the mess….not sure though. =)
You always have such fun ideas!!
How fun! I wish I had done this when I used to teach preschool! I cannot wait to have kids so I can do these fun activities with them!
lol I’m sure the mess is fun but well worth it!
such a creative and fun idea!
I hope it works the next time because it looks like an awesome craft to do with the kids!
LOL, you had such good intentions!
VERY CLEVER, I HAVE THIS ON MY BUCKET LIST TO DO W/ MY KIDS, I SAW IT ON NOODLE DOODLE!
colored ice is always fun!
fingers are crossed, prayers said…
I do hope it works for you. Sounds like it should be fun.
it’s a wonderful idea (but close to the hose and the wading pool and the popsicles that are sure to follow in, say,July?!)
You are so creative! It’s hard to imagine that one of your projects didn’t turn out so great! …But I can imagine what your hands looked like!
I like that you are still willing to give it another shot despite being left with rainbow bright hands. That’s a good mom, right there!
Hopefully the twins are coming here for spring break, and I AM GOING TO DO THIS!!! I have disposable gloves that I put on to handle the bait when I go crabbing (salmonella begone!!!), and I will have the kids put them on as well so their dad doesn’t freak out from all the color on their little fingers. Those gloves are cheap!!!
Was you able to get the colors off of your hands? I might try this with my girls, but I am not too sure about the mess it would make….
Hi again!
Such an interesting *O* post – great pics!
Look forward to *seeing* you again!
Visiting from Alphabe-Thursday
Great O post and LOL lots of things to do with kids are messes, arent’ they 🙂
It’s a wonderful idea, Mrs. Mom. Thought just occured to me (I always like to fix or solve things andd problems) that you could do the same with jelly beans. After you and Daniel could eat the art you guys had made.
..
And I bet your hands will stay that color for a week or two!! LOL How about using Popsicle sticks in bigger cubes (freeze the sticks in like a Popsicle)and that way your hands or fingers (or JDaniel’s) don’t get ‘colored’? You can swoosh them around and pick them up and do what you want with them that way…?
hope he loves helping you… I am sure he will 🙂
Oh no. So sorry to hear the ice cubes were not cooperating!
Our hands are colored every time with play with colored iced, too! The food coloring only seems to last until bath time though.
that’s different!
Ooohsome post! I haven’t tried this yet…ummm;) very soon..hehe
hugs

Dyed ice cubes – there’s a cool idea.
What a nifty, nifty idea!
I’ve never heard of this OR tried it!
I will definitely give this a go over the summer!
Sounds like it would cool fun for hot days, too!
Thanks for sharing your many wonderful ideas.
A+
Thank you so much for sharing something going wrong – always good to know it’s not just our activities that fail sometimes 🙂
I would love for you to link up at the Empty Your Archive party which has fun painting ideas as one of it’s themes this week – Alice @ Mums Make Lists x
