Your children are going to enjoy exploring this Offline Code Academy activity. The activity starts with your children reading or listening to a version of the Three Little Pigs. The activity ends with them drawing a house following the Blockly block coding sequence on the left side of a free worksheet.
Let me walk you through how I shared this activity with my students. You can walk your children through it the same way I did if like. There is also the option of coming up with your own way to share it.
Getting Ready for this Offline Code Academy Lesson
You will need to have at least one version of the Three Little Pigs on hand to read to your children. I was able to get ten different versions of the Three Little Pigs from my local library system. Below you will find some of my favorite versions of the Three Little Pigs.

Reading and Discussing the Book or Books
You can have your children read a version of the book on their own or with a partner. If you want them to listen to you read your favorite versions, that would fine too. After listening to the book, you can have your children discuss the following parts of the book.
- First, discuss who the main characters are.
- Second, you can discuss the setting of the book.
- Third, why are the three pigs or other animals are looking for places to live?
- Fourth, what building materials did they choose?
- Fifth, do you think the pigs choose different building materials if they knew what was going to happen to their houses?
- Sixth, what happens between the wolf and the pigs?
Discuss How an Algorithm Works
You will need to explain to your children that an algorithm is a series of steps needed to complete a task. The algorithm directions that they will need to follow are displayed on Drawing a House with Based on an Algorithm worksheet on Blocky blocks. (Blockly blocks are a puzzle piece like coding tool created by Google.)
Drawing a House
Your children are going to start by drawing the roof. Why? I wanted to make sure that there would be room for the roof. Some children might draw a large house and not have enough room left for a roof. Once the roof is done, they will draw walls for their house. After the walls, they will add a door, windows, and chimney. Once they have five things drawn, they will apply their own creative ideas to the picture. They will add details to the house like shutters, window boxes, shingles, and door decorations. Once they have finished with the house, they can decorate the background.
