As the school year draws to an end number of amazing bloggers are honoring their favorite teachers with a teacher appreciation letter today. For me, this was a hard task. I have been blessed with extraordinary teachers! From preschool through graduate school the teachers I had was amazing. Ultimately I selected Mrs. Ulrich to write a teacher appreciation letter. She impacted my life when I was one of her students and she still does today.
Dear Mrs. Ulrich,
Great teachers pass on their love of learning and share the subjects they truly love with passion. Even at nine, I could tell you love writing. You had us write every day. We wrote about what we were learning. We wrote about things we were discovering in experiments and through trips to the library. We wrote about our thoughts and feelings. We learned to find joy in recording our days in words.
During my fifth grade year with you, I wrote a Caldecott-style children’s book, a poetry anthology, a diary of my imaginary trip west in a covered wagon, a speech on a topic that interested me, and so much more. Words you told us to paint pictures! They show your reader what you know and what you want them to know. Words share your innermost thoughts!
Learning to write as a way to share my thoughts and interests was like giving me the keys to a magical door. My parents’ divorce two years earlier was really hard for me. We never talked as a family about how it affected us and changed our lives. You taught me that I could put my thoughts on paper. The year I had you I started journaling about my life and even wrote a short story about the events around my dad left our house. It was such a release to put my thoughts and feelings on paper.
Thanks to you I have continued to find writing as a source of joy, telling stories and release. I am passing that joy on to my son. On Sunday, a neighbor’s cat got stuck on our roof while they were on a day trip. Danielle sat down to write the neighbor’s son a letter telling him what happened. He told him how worried we had been. He wanted to share with him what he had missed while away. I love that he loves to write too.
I know that in this day and age people talk more about electronics in short phrases or thoughts. There is just something amazing about writing them down in poems, letters, stories, or journals. You taught me that decades ago and it truly changed my life.
Love,
Deirdre (JDaniel4’s Mom)

What an amazing letter! I am impressed you remember so much from 5th grade activities. My 5th grade teacher was also my favorite that I remember.

I bet you remember a lot of your 5th grade year too.
