This week JDaniel and I read the book Memorial Day Suprise by Theresa Martin Golding. It is a really fun story that talks about a young boy learning about Memorial Day, parades, and the fact that his grandfather is a war hero.
JDaniel and I made a Memorial Day musical shaker to parade around the house with. I stapled the stars around two paper plates that were filled with dried pasta. JDaniel added the stickers.
We really enjoyed marching around the house with his shaker as we had our own parade.

Love the project! Maybe we can do this for the 4th of July!

I’m sad to say I don’t think my kids even know what Memorial Day is. We’ve never really celebrated it. My grandpa was a major war hero, though, so I would love to get this book.

And all we did was have a bbq and eat ice cream! I’m with Michelle: I think I’ll borrow this idea for the 4th – or keep it in mind for next year.

Aww, that is so sweet and sounds like a fun way to share the meaning of Memorial Day with your son. Tell him he did a great job with those stickers!

From your posts, it sounds like you thoroughly enjoy spending time with your boy. Some of the happiest times in life were spent with my “littles” doing things like bubbles and going to spot duckies. Now life is a bit more complicated with teenagers and one that is kind of little. I sooo enjoyed my time and it looks like you do. Joni

Memorial Day is one holiday that is difficult to explain to children. It is nice to have books like this to help explain difficult subjects. I like your red white and blue shaker. I think that it would be great to use for the 4th.
