Do you get a thrill when you see a backhoe or dump truck on the road? Does excitement fill you when you notice a cherry picker at work? Up until a few months ago I would have said, “No!” Now that JDaniel is so into them I cheer, “Yes! Yes! Yes!”
JDaniel is really into seeing them at work. We are so blessed to live in an area that is growing and has a lot of buildings. Machines seem to be at work everywhere. In downtown Simpsonville, they have been building a sidewalk along Main Street. We cruise Main Street almost every day to see if the cement mixer is downloading cement or if the mini front loader is scooping up dirt. JDaniel is so disappointed if it is close to noon and the machines are parked so that the workers can go to lunch.
A month ago I drove from Simpsonville, S.C to August, GA to see my mother-in-law. JDaniel fell asleep about a fourth of the way into the trip. I was a good mother and didn’t wake him up when I passed a convoy of dump trucks or the school being built by many wonderful machines or the road crew out to repair a section of the road. I let him sleep, but how scary is it that I thought about waking him up.
A few weeks we went to a local park to play and left after a short time. It was too hot. On our way out of the park, we passed construction vehicles working on a project. “Stop Mom!” JDaniel announced loudly from the back seat. I did stop and we watched them work from the parking lot in our air-conditioned car for fifteen minutes.
The names of all the pieces of construction equipment are now cluttering my brain. I don’t know what you are thinking about when you are out driving. Right now I am thinking about what machine we will see next.

That is too cute. Gunne is obsessed with trucks right now and needs me to acknowledge every truck we see on the road. As in, “Truck. Yes, that’s a truck. A red truck!” Over and over again. =)

oh my, what fun to watch his wonderment at all these things. I can sit and watch a crane in action for a long long time myself!

I am fascinate by how certain machines work, i.e., a Mac computer, but not a truck though it probably more intriguing for kids

That’s what happens when you have little boys. They’ll be more boy things you’ll have to get interested in as he gets older lol. Great Z post.

What a fun post. I cracked up about you almost waking him from his nap to see the convoy of dump trucks 🙂 Kat

Wow, I was thinking about writing a post like this too, about getting excited about trucks and things that your kids like…we’re mind reading!
But that aside, my son gets so excited about trucks too. It makes him so happy!

That was a neat post. My grandson is crazy about trains! I can imagine what your floors look like with construction vehicles sprouting up here and there!
Melissa (Confessions of a Dr. Mom) says
Isn’t it so much fun? My 5 year old still loves to watch them work. We would always stop to watch them, and he knew every one by name..even stopped to take pics of them on our camera. Trains are a big thing too…gotta love the train museum.

Gosh, I wish I still had these DVD’s that Brad loved to watch all about construction equipment. He would watch them over and over. I bet JD would love them!…and I can’t remember the titles either…sorry!

Kids sure do love those trucks! I have a little girl, and she loves to look at them too!

When we were building our house, Micah was three and he loved all things construction. Our builder is a dear friend, and he actually let Micah help him drive the backhoe. It scared me spitless, but it filled a little boy’s eyes with delight. Totally worth it!

That is such a sweet age when construction equipment is entertaining~ it’s nice you can enjoy it thru your A/C windows 🙂

WE have so much highway construction going on right now and yes, it’s still exciting to see all the machinery. Of course delays make it entirely possible too! =)

There’s so much construction work going on now here in S Spain yr son would love it all! Great ‘Z’ post – congrats!
It’s been great meeting over the past 26 weeks!

My boys used to like watching construction machines at work too. It’s fascinating to see the power in these machines.

There’s something absolutely wonderful about machines that do construction work. I was completely absorbed in watching a demolition of a part of the old UM hospital yesterday when we had an appointment in the newer section. I could have watched (not danced) all day!
Have a great Thursday!

Great post! I can’t believe how much I learned about construction vehicles when my son was young! I love your posts about JDaniel, ideas for activities, and weekly “great posts” links. That’s why I gave you an award today at http://livingmontessorinow.com/2010/07/15/outstanding-blogger-award/.

It’s amazing the new things you learn because of your kids. I now know the names of many, many dinosaurs. Never thought I’d need that information before!
Rocky Mountain Woman says
I remember when my kids were obsessed with construction toys, they loved to take them outside and dig in the dirt. Laundry took on a whole new meaning in those years!

Wonderful post! When my boys were little, we’d do the same thing — we used to just stop and watch the machines whenever we drove by construction sites. I miss those days! Thanks for sharing!
And thanks for stopping by my blog and taking time to comment on my Zen Garden post. It’s fun to *meet* nice people through this meme.

What a cute link to Alphabe-Thursday’s letter “Z”!
There are so many cute books out about construction equipment now. I wish they would have been around when our son was small. He loved all that stuff.
Thanks for the happy stop today. I really enjoyed visualizing this…
And I always enjoy visiting you!

There is absolutely nothing in the world like the excitement of a little boy for a ‘digger’ or a big truck. What a lovely post – it took me back!

This makes me think about my boys when they were small. They LOVED any kind of truck or big equipment. We had books and movies and toys all over the place. Thanks for the smile this morning.

I still love all that equipment in miniature-size for the kids. Pssst, I would have woken him up to see all that equipment on the trip.

Diggers, trucks, trains and tractors were a constant topic in our house for quite a few years when my boys were young. We had picture books, posters, push along toys, wind-up models and sit and rides. Good times!

This describes my son! He loves these things and daddy knows all the names. Mommy, not so much 🙂 I mean I don’t know all the names. I don’t mind watching the big machines myself.

When my oldest was 2, there was construction down the road from us. We’d walk down every single day and he’d point out all the trucks and backhoes and bulldoyas (bulldozers). It was so sweet!
Thanks for checking in on my blog this week! I lost my links of blogs I read, and I’m slowly re-adding them as I see them! I’ve missed reading yours!

I can still remember my kids getting excited too. They had all the Tonka construction vehicles and they were metal back then. I wish I still had them! They’re putting in new sewer lines down the middle of the main street of our town and I can’t go anywhere without passing all the workers and equipment. JDaniel would love it!
