Last year I brought JDaniel fleece mittens online on sale. They were a little big for him even though they were size 18-24 months. He has little hands.
This year I pulled out the mittens when we got snow at Christmas time and tried putting them on him. They were still too big. I had hoped that his hands would have grown a little in a year.
The more I looked at the mittens the more I thought that they really should fit his hands. I decided to investigate the mittens and JDaniel’s hands in the mittens. First I tried placing his fingers in a mitten as far as they would reach. This was super easy. Next I tried placing his thumb in the mittens. This required my pushing my fingers into one of the mittens while it was on his hand. It was a tight fit in the mitten with both our hands in there. His thumb won’t push up. I really tried and it wouldn’t go up more than half way into the thumb section of the mitten.
After removing my fingers and his fingers from the mitten, I turned the mitten inside out. I tried stretching out the thumb section to its full length and the inside layer won’t extend. It didn’t make sense the out layer would extend, but not the inner one.
My inquisitive mind wanted to know if this was true about both mittens. It was true the inner layer of the thumbs on both mittens only extends so far.
JDaniel’s mittens were too large for the finger section. That I could fix by pulling them down further on his hands. The thumb issue wasn’t something I could fix. The thumbs were just not put together well in these warm yet defective mittens.
Do you think that is why they were on sale?

I have yet to find a really perfectly designed pair of kids’ mittens. I’m not sure they exist.

This is the same problem we have with Georgia’s mittens, so I don’t think it’s because they were on sale. We’ve been hunting for the perfect snow mittens for weeks now.

I’m making mittens this year for my grandchildren for next year for Christmas. I’m making them out of wool.. Oh my, they are so warm and I know they are going to like them.
It’s a really easy pattern.
I just smiled when I read your post.. Lol..
I think I would snip the inner lining so his thumb can go into the glove further.. then maybe his fingers can go further into the finger holes of these mittens..
Well yes, his thumb could get cold but at least he can wear these gloves..
ORRRRR here’s an idea…When the weather gets a little warmer but still needing something on the hands…cut the fingers off at the knuckle part of the mitten.. They can have gloves on their hands to keep them warm but fingers to be able to pick up things …
Our mailman did that with a pair of leather gloves…
Have a tiggeriffic day~! ta ta for now from Iowa annieptigger@aol.com

I thought maybe there was paper or something stuffed in there. LOL

Oh I hate that when that happens!!!

I doubt it…I would think that is just how they are made. Frustrating though. We are finally into gloves now…but when they are JDaniels size they still need mittens.

knock offs, when you buy mittens? always buy them in the store. I was out Christmas week bopping around town. I was at a Canadian Based store and saw those flip over gloves/mits for 2.00 and they looked great. I thought stocking stuffers. I didn’t have my boys with me and what kind of surprise is it if they are there? I borrowed another woman’s child and asked him how they felt on his hands? he said “they’re broke” “huh??” yep the inside fleece layer was too short and they were “seconds” which is why a normal 7-8$ pair of mit/gloves with a brand name on the bottom were only 2.00 regular price at this Canadian Based Car product store…

LOL!! tiggeriffic, those gloves come like that 🙂 The mail man probably bought them with the fingers not there. I do love though hand knitted mittens. I have a pink and white pair, love them. Mittens are much warmer then gloves because all your fingers are giving all your other fingers body warmth. LOL

Sorry you had to be bothered by those misfit mittens. Ever since my children were tots, I’ve bought mittens and gloves on sale at the end of season and I’ve never had any issues, but who knows.

This has happened with my older daughter and mittens / gloves! Sometimes the ones we buy will not let her put her thumb in far enough! She has one pair that if you didn’t put your thumb in perfectly right and just so it would not go! There was another (extra??) hole in the thumb area that would catch your thumb and make it shorter, so weird! We had to buy another pair that year. You would think a mitten would not be that hard for the manufacture to get right ya know!

but yep, that is probably the reason…
