JDaniel and I went to our local children’s museum on Thursday. It was crowded due to several school having field trips there.
Eight to ten year olds were running all over the water play area when we arrived. Water was flying out of the water pools. Waterwheels were spinning wildly shooting water across the pools and on to the children. Each child seemed to be having a wonderful time. There wasn’t any rough play just a bunch playful splashes.
It looked chaotic and wild when we first approached the play pool. I was worried JDaniel would be knocked over. Yet he was able to play with a toy boat and small duck amongst the big kids. He was in heaven.
I noticed the teacher when we entered the water area. She was quietly watching her class play. When one child slipped while trying to run to a different part of the pool, she quietly sauntered over to check on her, made sure she was okay, and reminded her to be careful. She had such a quiet loving way about her.
When it was time for her class to move to another exhibit, she quietly raised her hand. It took about two minutes for the first child to notice the raised hand. Once that child moved to get in line the other got in line behind her.
I stood there amazed at this wonderful teacher. She has obviously set ground rules with her students earlier in the year about lining. I bet she was clear with them about what she expected them to do.
I hope that JDaniel’s life is filled with teachers just like her.

I can’t imagine having that sort of control over a whole class. Amazing.

Wow. I find this difficult with just two children! I keep hoping they are better behaved for teachers.

What a wonderful demonstration that behavior management does not have to mean yelling, screaming, and threats. Children will respond when rules are clear and respect is shown.

Great teacher! It must have taken a LOT of patience to get her class to follow her quiet directions.

You can always tell a good teacher in situations like that. The good ones always seem to have the respect and understanding of their students.

That takes a lot of patience. I could never be a teacher.

Wow, that teacher has such impressive, quiet control. I sort of wish I could control my kids like that…and I only have two!

My daughter had a kindergarten teacher like that last year. She was amazing! She was in control, but the kids still loved her and she loved them. Now I just need to learn to do that with my own children. Thanks for sharing. Janae

I love hand gestures where the kids know exactly what to do. Our principal can raise his hand in a chaotic gym with all the students and they all raise their hands to show that they are paying attention and all get quiet. It is quite amazing! Hope you are having a great weekend.!

A wonderful teacher indeed. It is always so nice when you hear or read about a teacher who has such patience, kindness and truly cares for the students.

That is SO great- and this post made me think that I should start to come up with a signal that gets pumpkins attention in future. What a helpful thing- and it would eliminate the need to shout over noise!

She does sound like a great teacher. My mom was an elementary school teacher when I was little. Wonder if she commanded such gentle silent obedience? Wish I could go back in time and see her in the classroom. Great blog, D.

Wow. That’s incredible. Much more effective than yelling and whistling. Less stressful for everyone.

We’ve had teachers like that in the past. It’s amazing the control that they have over their class and it’s done in such a gentle way. They children respect the teacher and do what’s expected of them! Now if they’d only do the exact same thing at home…
