With my three year old leaning against my legs
Soaking in the sunlight
Staring at up at the white fluffy clouds
Each viewing different images in our imagination
One sees a dragon
One sees a seahorse
Both sure that their answer is true
We savor this moment in early March
When we can spend moments together outside
In a world just coming alive
Soon we will be cloistered inside
Away from the pollen that will coat
The outside world blooming with life
To be outside would lead to suffering and despair
My small son would have watery red eyes
His nose would drip endlessly and bumpy red rashes would cover his skin
While inside we will treat the side effects of the outside world
Remembering the joys of laying outside in the sun
Watching fluffy white clouds float by
Hoping that by summer we will have relief.
JDaniel has had allergic reactions to pollen and several other spring related things outside since he was a baby. He takes medicine and has nebulizer to help him through the spring and early summer. We do spend time outside on low pollen days. It is just hard to have to tell him that there are days we just can’t play outside. Those are the days we go to the library, invite friends over to play, go to the children’s museum, and pretend play at home.
We are hoping that he outgrows these allergies.

I hope he outgrows them. I had asthma and terrible allergies as a kid and I outgrew most of it – what remains is very mild.

What a sweet memory of being outside to share, and that it gives hope for more days like that after the pollen count goes down. i enjoyed your poem 🙂

What a beautiful, peaceful image of soaking up spring! I’m sorry JDaniel’s allergies will keep him inside soon but today’s moments can give him hope for outdoor days after the pollen attack…

As soon as I saw the name of this over at Mama Kat’s I knew I wanted to read it. I don’t have allergies but my husband suffers from it. It’s awful to feel so helpless when he is so miserable. He is a soccer coach, so he’s required to be on the fields…. his eyes will be swollen almost completely shut but the time he gets home. I’m sorry to hear you son suffers from allergies… that can’t be any fun for a kid!

I like your poem very much! I can relate to it a bit, since I’ve started to feel the familiar tightening in my throat as seasonal allergies begin to poke their head out. I’m so sorry your son deals with that; and like the others, I hope he outgrows it.
I love how you made a happy memory out of it!

This has to be difficult. My son has no allergies that I know of but he’s autistic so we face a good deal of social challenges.

I was out running errands this morning, and I noticed the world coming alive! It is so wonderful! Nice poem. I’m sorry your son suffers from allergies.

Lovely words.
And a not-so-lovely problem with allergies. Hopefully, he will grow out of them. My kids did, and they had terrible ones…especially my youngest. (Even if he doesn’t grow out of it entirely, the medications that older kids and adults can take are so much better now that he will do fine…but I’m optimistic that he will just grow out of the whole thing.
=)

Allergies are tough. I had plenty of them, and I remember sneaking wheat and other “forbiddens” as a child.

This was so beautiful. I love how you wrote of it. I am so sorry your sweetie gets so ill with the pollen. My eyes cry from April to May because of the pollen. It is horrid.

I hope the little guy outgrows his allergies too! That’s not fun when he has to stay inside. Poor little man. I have seasonal allergies and I can already start feeling it. Thank Goodness for Nasonex nasal spray. It really helps me but then again, my allergies aren’t extremely bad.
Sweet poem!

Isn’t pollen such a mess! :

I hope he outgrows those allergies too. Such a bummer to spend spring and summer inside.

Wonderful poem. I dread Spring, and still get moderate allergies even though I take flonase every day. Pollen is such a nasty part of Spring!

Our family doesn’t have allergies, so I haven’t really thought about how tough it would be to not be able to enjoy the Springtime, or maybe windy days. Lovely expression.

We are very familiar with allergies, unfortunately. Can he get allergy shots? His sound really severe.
I’m glad you could enjoy those moments now..

I pray he outgrows them also! That just stinks!

Yea, allegies are no fun. I’ve had my whole life, year round. (Right now, the beautiful cherry blossoms have every cell itching!) Thankfully, it looks like I haven’t passed them onto my boy. Hope yours feels better soon! :>

Oh I feel so bad for your son. I have horrible allergies as well and suffered horribly as a child. Thankfully they seem to be under control as an adult with lots of medicine.
Beautiful poem

oh boo. Allergies are lame. My son breaks out in hives but we don’t know why, I blame the sunrise. However, we are able to muscle through it. Enjoy the puffy clouds!

Allergies are so not fun. I was bothered more when I was a kid and luckily my kids don’t have allergies.

Love the first part of your poem, makes me dream of spring from my town that is FULL of snow!
Sorry about the pollen, though….such a bummer for you guys. Enjoy your weather before the pollen comes your way!

Also – I wanted to say thanks for stopping by Stanwood PlaySchool the other day and leaving some comment love. I mentioned you in my new Feature Friday post! 🙂

Thank you for your example of being a mom who makes beautiful lemonade out of lemons. You son is truly blessed.
Happy Mom Loop Friday!

I really hope he outgrows them! My son actually started developing an allergy to something out there within the last couple of years. It’s so weird how it came on later for him.
I’m glad you just tweak your activities to make sure he doesn’t feel too bad about not getting outside to play on high pollen count days.
Tammy says
What a great tool to teach him now…retelling is so important in developing comprehension (as you already know). I love seeing that! You rock it mama!

i hate that he has to deal with that…
but he has such a wonderful mom that is makes up for it!

I hope he does outgrow his allergies. There is something so wonderful about laying in the grass and watching the clouds float by. Bad allergies are no fun! Stopped by from follow friday on blogfrog.

I feel for your son. It’s not fun with allergies. I heard certain foods help with allergies like onions and broccoli
