Mama Kat lists several topics to write about in her Writer’s Workshop each week. One of the ideas for this week was 22 things you have done.
My list of things we have done is going to focus on things we have done for Halloween at our house or the history of Halloween at our house. I am going to tell you a few things have done each year since JDaniel was born.
First Year
Dressed my 7 month old son in a pumpkin costume.
Had my husband and I dress like farmers.
Left my mom at my house to pass out candy while we wheeled JDaniel in his stroller around the neighborhood.
Read the book Redeeming Halloween by Kim Wier and Pam McCune to start thinking about how we wanted to celebrate the holiday.
Decided to pass out baked goods and/or candy to neighbors whose homes we trick or treated to as a way to reach out to neighbors. We passed out cookies with the a message wishing them a blessed Halloween attached to the bag.
Second Year
Had two cute costumes and had JDaniel wear both to different events.

Took JDaniel to a nursing home to attend a Halloween party for seniors and toddlers dressed as a lion’
Started the tradition of carving JDaniel’s pumpkins the day before Halloween.
Learned that he doesn’t like to touch pumpkin pulp.
Dressed him as a dinosaur for a library event and for trick or treating.
Bought a reusable Halloween bag with Frankenstein on it to use as a trick or treat bag.
Started trick or treating with the family next door
Ran from the front of our subdivision with a wet dinosaur when it started pouring.
Third Year
Had JDaniel decide that he didn’t want to wear the costume I bought at a consignment sale.

Decided that his choice of a Dalmatian costume was a great choice.

Coveted the ability one of my friends had to make super cute Halloween cupcakes.
Took JDaniel to Nevin’s farm to go on a hay ride and select a pumpkin.
Discovered my husband could eat as much of JDaniel’s Halloween candy as I could. If I was going to sneak Snickers, I was going to have to do it when we came home from trick or treating.
Fourth Year
Let JDaniel pick out his own robot costume.
Paid full price for a Halloween costume.
Had a robot running around the house in early October when the costume came in.
Tried to make pumpkin soup my family would eat twice.
I hope you enjoyed our family history of Halloween.
What are some of you traditions?
This post is linked to my Halloween Traditions linkup, Mrs. Matlock, and Mama Kat’s Writing Workshop.
Many wonderful experiences and traditions!
Looks like you all have had lots of Halloween fun.
Blessings,
Dawn
Love the Dalmation costume. My boys are past the years of dressing in cute costumes now. My oldest says he isn’t dressing up at all. And my youngest refused to be anything at all resembling “cute.” *sigh*
What a fun post. Love your traditions
Hubs and I fight over the boys’ halloween candy! LOL
I have a good pumpkin soup recipe if you want it!
Lovely memories and traditions! Halloween is such a fun time of the year! Wishing you a beautiful day! ~Hugs, Leah
Love the pictures. We always have a quick and easy pizza dinner the night of Halloween. My son also hates pumpkin pulp (we call it the guts – so maybe that has something to do with it).
My kids eat their candy for like a day and then they are all done and my hubby and I end up eating the rest! That’s 3 bags of candy!!!
This is very entertaining. We haven’t celebrated Halloween before Anna was born (except giving out the candy). Now we are decorating, having costumes for everyone and going to the parties. Children do have this capability to change our world.
LOVE the spider cupcakes!
Hi again!
Such great traditions – fun post!
And thanks too for stopping by. Have a great weekend & look forward to *seeing* you again next time,
LOLA:)
I loved this post….
Maybe I need to try something like this for us…
A little trip down memory lane of sorts! 🙂
That’s a nice story and what a progress ! We never celebrated Halloween when my son was little, it’s just moving into Belgium slowly slowly and some Halloween parties for kids are starting. Each year a little more in Belgium.
Loads of Halloween memories! Love that!!
It must be such fun to experience Halloween through the years with a toddler, especially one who knows what he likes to dress up as! Pumpkin soup… yum! You already know about my brief history with this holiday… 😉
Great fun watching the costumes evolve…our house has been too long without little ones and their anticipations…living way out in the country we always try to have something special prepared for the one family that brings their sweeties down the road for a visit.
my traditions are pretty much the same…i didn’t buy any costumes this year. We have a happy dress up box that I figured they could work with, and Q decided he wanted to be buzz lightyear…again. Which is fine with me. We will be carving pumpkins and trick or treating, but I might stay home and hand out candy with Tobin. I didn’t get him a costume. He’s the third child, he suffers much.
Looks like a hoot! And I must say your son is ADORABLE. Seriously so so so sooooo cute!
What a fun post, and it will be neat for your cute son to have down the road.
=)
PS. We have the fewest traditions in our family around Halloween. Usually we are big on unique holiday traditions, but on Halloween we are pretty standard.
Oh this was just the sweetest 22 things you did for Halloween, what a darling son!
Too sweet! I love dressing them up in costumes. It’s hard when they start to have a say-so, though. Mine are 12,8,5 and 3…the oldest seems to have more say over their costumes than me. Love your traditions…family traditions are so important!
I love the history of your Halloween’s! The lion and dalmatian are adorable costumes!
Living in AZ, we can’t carve our pumpkins until the 30th or they dissolve into a pile of mush. Eww.
I love how it has changed each year, and every year sounds equally fun!
Aw…he is going to be a great looking robot. Can’t wait to see pictures.
That’s great! You’re building your traditions and have many years to look forward to! How kind to give treats to neighbors while trick or treating.
I have many years of Halloween behind my belt. I always made my kids’ costumes. Once my daughter was a tree with real branches. That was crazy! I borrowed my daughter’s kitty costume a few days ago when my book club met. We decided it would be fun to dress up!
I especially like your traditions of doing for others. As sweet as any Halloween candy, if you ask me!
Great halloween memories..
What great traditions! Halloween is so much fun with little kids! I have found that as Tobin is getting older, I HAVE to let him pick out his own costume or else he won’t wear it!
Look how young he looks when he was 2!!! Loved the lion costume! 🙂
Love the costumes especially the lion! So sweet. We always let the children eat pizza before we Trick or Treat our fave neighborhood. Then we go home..check each piece of candy (never can be too safe even if you know most of the people). 🙂 Afterwards they eat SOME candies and watch Its the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown (Every year!). Then it’s time to prepare for Thanksgiving.
I miss when my boys were little enough to dress up as whatever I wanted — a bunny or a Tigger. Now it can’t be much less than something ninja like. Sigh.
Those costumes are precious! When my oldest was 1 – I made him a leopard costume all the boys have worn! Ears and all! We’ve been hobbits, Legolas, a guy in a box, soccer players, football players, cowboys. I remember one year it SNOWED as we pulled the kids around in a wagon – it was so awful and cold!
I’m going to steal that cupcake idea! I LOVE THEM!
Have an awesome Halloween!
I love the idea of JDaniel running around like a robot! Never heard of pumpkin soup… Have a fun Halloween! {:-Deb
The cupcakes look delicious! Halloween is so fun with kids. I love seeing the costumes they wear.
That was so cute! It’s been a long time since I had a child to take trick or treating, but I’m flying east on Saturday and will trick or treat with my 2 and 4 year old grandsons – can’t wait!
Our children always had great costumes – a Ghost buster, tube of toothpaste, witch, Viking, old fashioned nurse….so much fun and such great memories.
Your post really made me think of the hallowe’ens of the past – thanks!
That’s so nice to know of your Halloween history and traditions. Love the look of those spider cupcakes and JDdaniel looks so cute in his costumes! 🙂
I love that your wrote down the history. I’ll bet he’s an adorable robot. Your friends cupcakes are awesome. And I like to sneak out the snickers too. 🙂
Well, living in Germany, I didn’t even know about Halloween when I was growing up, but now as an adult, I love to decorate for Halloween and read about other people’s favorite Halloween memories such as yours. 🙂
We usually carve our pumpkin the day before just because we haven’t gotten them yet.
Those cupcakes look yummy! I can’t wait to see pictures of him dressed as a robot!
I wish I still had kids at home. I would be able to do so many things because of you!
