For today’s muffin tin lunch I am featuring a road trip tin. The Nutella covered bread car body has blueberry tires, but the tires could easily we replaced by any of the spare tires in the tin.
JDaniel has cucumber, carrot, tomato, franks, and sandwich cookie tire replacements available to him if the blueberries can’t make the whole trip.
Why am I featuring a car trip tin?
JDaniel and I are joining my mom, my sister from Atlanta and her kids on a road trip to see my sister in New York. It will be loads of fun when stop in Hershey, PA to explore the amusement park. My sister from New York and her kids are meeting us there and then will continue north to NY to my sister‘s house, but I am worried about something.
I worry about the length of time we will be in the car. It is a long car ride. JDaniel has been on long trips before, but was much younger and slept most of the way. I can just hear him asking if we are there yet when we have only been in the car for a short time. He asked over and over again on the trip to Augusta, GA last weekend when we went to see his Nana.
He will be able to use the iPad. I just downloaded two new apps for him to explore on the trip. JDaniel has to brand new headphones to listen to the apps through. He and I searched all over Greenville for headphones that weren’t 100% plastic that had volume control. He loves them. JDaniel loves to use the iPad so, I am hoping he will be able to play with apps for awhile and we won’t all here what he is listening too.
During the trip, he will get to trade the iPad with his nine-year-old cousin for his DVD player. That will be fun too. He loves to watch movies or as he calls them shows.
I really don’t want him to be plugged in the whole trip though so, I am bringing along a few other things to do. We are bringing some of the things you suggested to me when I asked you on Facebook about travel items.
What is in our road trip bag?
A cookie sheet with magnets to play with as mentioned by Lisa of Two Bears Farm. Craft to Art.com thought magnets were a great idea too and thought a cookie tin would be a great place to store and display magnets.
Window markers and a pack of Windex wipes as well a pack of post-it notes to write on and stick on the windows as suggested by Holly of Holly’s Hobbie and Darbee Days
Surprise toys as recommended by Denice Castillo. I found a couple at the dollar store.
A DVD player and Leapster were Sara DeNike of The Will to See ideas. We have the DVD coming from Atlanta.
Here are other things I came up with for your road trip with kids:
Stickers
JDaniel’s favorite book First Encyclopedia of Animals and a few other books
I Spy Travel windows ( I have a post coming up on them.)
Snacks
Pipe cleaners
With all these things to do, I am hoping I really don’t have to worry this road trip.
What other things do you think I should bring on the road trip?
You will find more food creations on my Food Creations board on Pinterest.

This is a cute muffin tin! I’m looking forward to doing MTM again this summer. My mom, kids, and I did a road trip through Hershey, Pa and onto NY two summers ago and had a wonderful time. I hope your trip goes well!
Oh, we went to Lancaster, PA too. The kids really enjoyed that area too.
JDaniel4's Mom says
We should try to stop in Lancaster too.
JamericanSpice says
I love the idea of your travel tin and the color of it.
I also love your ideas for travel fun with the kids. I try to include a few things too when we travel.
At other times, I insist we sit and look out our windows and things and talk about them or play outside games in the car 🙂
Have a safe trip.
JDaniel4's Mom says
Just sitting and looking sounds like something I need to add to our list of things to do.
Jode says
I love your travel muffin tin…what fun! Good luck with your drive…some really great ideas you have collected there! We have been a little scared about venturing too far in the car since we had our twins as one hates driving for too long. Perhaps i shall get braver now with some of your fab ideas…thanks for sharing and wishing you lots of luck xx
JDaniel4's Mom says
Let me know if you end up traveling this summer.

Sounds like all the makings of a great trip! I want to try window markers when we go to the beach!
One thing we did on our trip to Williamsburg was stop off at Trader Joe’s, which we don’t have here. I let the boys pick out special car snacks for the trip, and they were a huge hit.
We call them ‘shows’ too 🙂
JDaniel4's Mom says
I love Trader Joe’s too. I am so glad we hae one in town.

This is so cool! I just adore the idea of incorporating life into the muffin tin meals!
The only thing I can think of is what I’m sure you’ve already prepared for…snacks. Snacks are always a good idea on a road trip. We also enjoy playing “I Spy” (of course, not when you’re the driver.)It’s really fun and fast paced on the road. No one gets bored because they only have a limited time to guess what you spy as you’re passing by, and then it’s time to move along. 🙂
Thanks for sharing this week!
Blessings,
Kristine

I’m coming in your car for our next road trip! Sounds like a great time!! Also, my girls are 10 & 8 and we pack up the same amount of stuff to keep them occupied. The happier they are in the car, the happier we are, right?!
Safe travels!

Nancy says
I’m going back a “few” years when we took trips as a family (4 girls plus my parents!) and we had coloring books, books, those cheap plastic “arcade” games, etch a sketch, and always a magic tablet (the ones you write on then lift the sheet to erase.)
Sounds like you have alot to keep him busy — have a great time!
JDaniel4's Mom says
I love your ideas! They are oldies and goodies!
Natalie @ MamaTrack says
You guys are going to have a great time! Patience–that’s why I always need in the car. It’s hard on both of us.

I wanna go to to Hershey! YUM!
When my oldest was 3 we went on a really long road trip. We didnt have a DVD player or any sort of electronic games to keep him busy! (How the heck did we DO that?? lol) So I went to the dollar store and bought about 20 little things he could play with in the car, and I only gave him a new one like every hour. It worked out really well. Plus since it was all cheapie stuff I didnt care if it got broke and needed to be thrown away.
JDaniel4's Mom says
I have heard $ store items are a real hit with kids!

Great theme! Our road trips to see my parents are at least 6-7 hours long and it is a test of any mommy’s patience! I love your travel ideas. I remember getting carsick very easily so I just tell the kiddies to bring their favorite travel stuffie/buddy and blanket for cuddling! I also bake a special batch of travel cookies and muffins. 🙂
JDaniel4's Mom says
I will need to make sure JDaniel’s teddy bear is up front with us! Great tip!
Mom of 12 says

JDaniel4's Mom says
It sounds like he loves nutella too.
Keitha says
Cute muffin tin! We like to play “name change” in the car on trips. Everyone picks a new name. If someone calls you by your real name, then they have to be silent until you tell them they can talk. My son thinks this is hilarious and he purposefully calls your real name just so he can be caught doing it. We even play it at home. We also like to sing and listen to books on tape (cd). Our public library has a large collection of books on tape that you can borrow for two weeks at a time.
Malia {Playdough to Plato} says
This couldn’t come at a better time! I was just thinking that I need to add a little variety to our car activities. Thank you!
