My husband had beautiful beech trees planted in the backyard. They are tall and have an elegance to them. Recently they have been losing limbs in summer storms. Not just small branches have been falling although have been dropping down too. It is the large limbs that seem to crack and hang precariously off the large branches following storms.
My husband has been able to get on a tall ladder and cut them down thus far. Although a really large limb cracked last week and I thought we might need to have a tree removal company come and take it down. My husband barely had to pull on this branch for it to come down which was kind of scary.
I have worked at keeping JDaniel away from the branches until they are down on the ground. They make me nervous dangling from so high up.
Once the limbs are on the ground, I am ready to cut the limbs into smaller pieces and drag to the curb. Jdaniel is ready to play in the branches. I tend to give him a morning of supervised play before I start breaking the branches down.
He has loved playing fort in the branches.
Later he likes to peel the bark off the branches with pliers. I am not sure why that is fun for him, but he sure does like to do it.
He could spend all morning peeling bark off and putting it into piles. It is so hard for him to see the branches slowly disappearing to the curb when he time of bark peeling is over.

there’s always a chance to grow a new one, I think. it’s too bad you couldn’t recycle the tree branches for other things.
hope you have a great day.

I half expected a leg amputation!!! I’m so glad it was only a tree!

We have been having the same trouble with our huge gumtrees here…the other day one huge branch fell and cracked the lid of the twins sandpit cover….i dread to think what would ahve happened if we were playing there at the time!
So lovely that he got to have some good old fashioned fun playing with the branches though…love the pliers!
Lisa @ Two Bears Farm says
Haha, he needs to come to our place to play – more tree limbs to play with than he could count 😉

Oh this made me smile. Yay for playing fort! And peeling the bark off of the branches just sounds like something my son would love to do as well. I can imagine him doing the same thing.

He is adorable and a little ‘nature boy’ ~ do hope the trees survive even though he likes to play with the limbs ~ wouldn’t it make good firewood or don’t you have a fireplace? ~ thanks for coming by (A Creative Harbor)

That’s so cute playing among the branches. My kids haven’t tried doing that before. WE don’t have storms here lately.

I do hate to see beautiful trees slowly fall apart, but it’s wonderful that JDaniel finds joy in little things like pulling bark off with pliers. And I can see that the limbs make great forts.
Splendid Little Stars says
How painful to watch limb after limb come down! sad. JDaniel knows how to have some fun with this though. That’s good.
There have been storms here over the last few years that have knocked whole trees down. A few years ago, we lost 3 trees. not terrible since we have deep woods in the back.

That is so funny that he likes to peel the bark off. Cute pic!
=)
PS. Hope you don’t lose any of your trees. I love mine, as I can see you do.

Great fun for an unfortunate loss. Don’t you love how kids can make the best of things.

Peeling bark — now that’s an interesting occupation! Kids have the knack of clever play!
Tammy says
Kids love peeling bark! When I grew up there was a place that would take in the bark and pay people per weight of the bark. He could have been rich with the bark! 🙂
Liz @ A Nut in a Nutshell says
I love that you let him play to his heart’s content before disposing of it. What a wonderful way to explore.

We have a problem here with trees and/or branches coming down from storms. They sometimes take out houses when the go!
Very scary!
RedTedArt says
Ah so sad to see the trees come down, isn’t it!? But looks like it kept your little one busy quite some time!

That is cute that he liked to peel off the bark. : )

Looks like he had a great time!

It’s better to cut them down before they get too dangerous. We have lots of storms where we live, and the tree in our backyard split in two and almost fell on the house. We had to get it cut down right after a big storm.
Erika says
With two years of drought, the trees are dying and large branches are falling. I worry about the kids being out under one of them (or anyone else along our street).
At least you were able to turn it into a nice adventure!
Carrie says
Oh, how fun!! We have cut down a bunch of trees lately due to limbs coming down in storms. We took a bunch of branches and made a fort for my daughter. Thank you for sharing at Sharing Saturday!!
Trisha @ Inspiration Laboratories says
Oh, the simple joys of little boys! Thanks for sharing at the Sunday Showcase.
Jenny says
I love these trees.
Maybe the storms are thinning the branches so they can grow stronger.
Okay.
yeah.
That was a bit too philosophical for a Saturday morning…
But…
I remember my kids playing with tree limbs. They would pile them up and create forts and castles and all kinds of magical things with their imaginations!
Thank you for a happy memory.
I really enjoy watching your son experience life.
