Scanning the frozen food section for new products along with products my guys love has become a weekly shopping habit. When I was asked to share a frozen food idea by the National Frozen & Refrigerated Foods Association, I agreed wholeheartedly. With JDaniel in swimming and soccer this past spring I needed to find quick and delicious foods to prepare for my family. We have always loved frozen vegetables, but now I was looking for other meal elements like dairy products in that section too. Recently while browsing in the frozen food section I saw a berry smoothie mix. I decided that the frozen fruit and chunks of frozen yogurt in the smoothie mix would make a quick and delicious summertime fruit salad dessert.
Here is how I put the fresh and frozen fruit salad together:
The mixture came with frozen strawberries and blueberries along with frozen yogurt. I dumped the frozen mixture into a bowl. The clumps of fruit were separtated with a spoon and I used kitchen scissors to cut the yogurt chunks into smaller pieces.
Then I added fresh grapes. Mixing fresh fruit with frozen was intended to add a temperature contrast as well as a textural one. Sometimes teeth and taste buds don’t enjoy a totally frozen dessert.
While I was taking the smoothie mix out of the frozen dairy food area of freezer section, I noticed a tub of whipped topping. JDaniel loves it and I decided it need to be a part of the fruit salad too. Instead of letting it defrost and dapping it on the fruit salad I stuck a star shaped cookie cutter into the tub semi- frozen whipped topping. While attempting to lift the star of the tub, it smooshed. The star ended up looking a little bit like modern art.
I decided to add it to the top of the dessert despite its irregular shape. JDaniel by this time was heading down to have his lunch. He would have been ready to dig in before I had attempted a second star. I decided to just leave the star alone.
JDaniel was thrilled with his fresh and frozen fruit salad. The whipped dessert star and the frozen yogurt yogurt chunks were his favorite.
As he ate his sandwich and vegetable portions of his lunch, the topping and yogurt started to melt. The melting mixture coated the fresh and frozen fruit with a creamy dressing. It look heavenly.

My mom used to freeze plain yogurt mixed with berries when I was a kid. It sounds like the frozen smoothie that you bought. I like this idea for a cool summer treat.
