Every few days we would get a recorded reminder about the need to fund raise on the phone or we would receive an e-mail or written reminder. After hearing from every grandparent and aunt we thought we would get donations from, I disregarded these reminders. We have done what we could do.
Round and round he ran. “You might need to walk a lap to rest,” my husband called to him as JDaniel swept by us. “Can’t Dad! I have lots of laps to go,” he called over his shoulder. He continued to run and run. He ran with his water cup in hand and water sloshing everywhere. I have never seen him run so much he is whole life.
Thankfully the DJ playing music to inspire the students to run and keep upbeat announced a few laps that everyone had to walk from time to time. I think JDaniel even move fast during those laps. He feet were on fire and so were his cheeks each time he flew by us.
The final lap was declared the “Parent Walk with Me” lap. JDaniel was so proud to hold both of our hands as we walked the lap together. (In that moment I was thankful that we are both still job hunting.) We were both able to make a kindergarten memory all with him that we will all carry with us forever. ”
The fun run was so worth the money we raised for the school. JDaniel had a sense of accomplishment and pride that I haven’t seen in him in kindergarten so far this year. He had the drive and sense of purpose that I hope he will carry into other challenges that he comes up against.
I believe that running with all you have is possible when you have a sense of self, the drive to complete a task, others running with you, and a cheering section. I am so glad that I get to be a part of the cheering section for my very special runner. Getting the see that broad smile and receive a huge hug of thanks for coming to his run was priceless.

My daughter just had a fun run also this past week. It’s so much fun to do with your child and as a whole school in general. Would love to see more events like this at schools just for fun. I loved the excited it built for the kids to be physically active.

This is a beautiful post, and thank you for sharing it with us. So many people have so many concerns about the fundraising, but something like this is cool, the kids get so much out of it – it’s so much more than the money raised. 🙂 He’s a sweetheart who is lucky to have such supportive parents!

Sounds like he found something he loves. Start saving up for those race entry fees now – they add up 😉

I am glad you both could be there for him – it matters so much to our children when they are so little. We have a “walkathon” in spring, and it’s set up in the same way…

Aw, that’s amazing. I think I need all of that to run, but when I don’t have it, the running doesn’t happen. So awesome you were both with him that day. It will be an unforgettable memory for him.

That’s so neat that the kids got in on the raising of the money; he had to work for it by running. That’s what I like about Jump Rope for the Heart to.
My sons brought home a candy bar, and beef jerky box sheet. They would have to sell them, then the rest that wasn’t sold the parents would have to buy. Sadly I declined. I just don’t want candy bars in my home. My husband and I both work at small businesses. I’d rather just donate money.

Sounds like a wonderful, healthy way for kids to learn about self-accomplishment and determination. It looks like mom & dad got a special reward in all of it, too. That’s just fabulous! Great “R” post. 🙂

JDaniel surely had fun! And the fact that he stuck with it speaks volumes!
My son is participating in an upcoming run — a half marathon, but he’s never done that before (only shorter ones) so I’m proud of him. Of course he is a bit older than JDaniel (32)!!
Maybe this will start JDaniel’s marathon running career!!

Sounds like a great experience for your son…and for mom and dad, too!

Way to go JDaniel!
So many laps! What a wonderful accomplishment.
And the mom in me teared up when you said you both got to hold his hands on the final lap. Definitely a moment to remember!

Wow! JDaniel did an amazing run! He may have found a good sport because if you can be that small and run that fast and do that many laps I can see a future cross country runner at your house! The fun run was a good experience for a small child. Running can really instill confidence in a child and running is not tied to a clique, a club or anything, the open roads are ready for you to run! I loved this post!
