If you plan on using these counting worksheets featuring number shells, you will need to give your children a set of objects to count. We used a set of glass pebbles from the dollar store that included a variety of ocean themed colors. You could also use vase accents pebbles in aquamarine that are available online or blue pom-poms or small shells if you like.
You can put out a few numbers for your children to work on one to one correspondence with or the full set of shell counting worksheets. It is really up to you.
If you have young children, you may want to have them tell you each number and then help them place the correct number of objects on it. It will depend on how comfortable your children are with counting.
Other Uses for the Counting Worksheets
- You can have your children create addition number sentences.
Example: Put out the number four and the number two. Have your children place the correct number of counter on each number. Then have them combine the number to find the sum. Finally they will place the combined number of objects on the number that equals the sum.
- Your children can sort the numbers into even and odd numbers. They can then place the correct number of counters on each number.
- Your children can create subtraction sentences. They can choose a large number. Next they will place the correct number of counters on that number. Then they will divide the objects into two groups. Finally they will put each of the groups of objects on its matching number card.
