Valentine’s Day is only a week away I thought this would be the perfect time to explore the book Guess How Much I Love You by Sam McBratney. It tells the tale of a big and a little sharing how much they love each other. At one point in the story, Little Nutbrown Hare stretches his arms as wide as they can go to show how much he loves Big Nutbrown Hare. It was that statement and illustration that inspired this measuring length in non-standard units activity.

Exploring the Activities
Working with the Measuring Bunnies Page
Each of your children will need a copy of the measuring bunnies page and a cup or bag of conversation hearts. They will need to measure each of the bunnies from its feet to the tips of its ears.
After measuring each bunny they will need to record how many hearts tall each bunny is on the line beneath it. If your children are having trouble writing their numbers, they can write the number in tally marks.
Working with the Bunny Rulers
You can give your children a color or black and white version of the bunny ruler.
Then you can ask them how many hearts tall a certain number of bunnies is.We found that one bunny from feet to ears is about two hearts tall.
Children choose how many bunnies they want to measure or your can choose the number for them. Actually you could take turns picking how many bunnies to measure with hearts.
