The theme of the Cub Scout camp JDaniel will be attending this summer is the Wild West. There is always downtime between the various activities. I thought it would be fun to make some decode this code worksheets for children to work on during that downtime. Each worksheet features an alphabet code breaking chart and cowboy themed words for the children discover.
Building Vocabulary Before Starting the Activity
Before you pass out the Cowboy Themed Words Decode This Code Activity sheets, you may want to read them a children’s book about cowboys. I have found that even the older boys like to have books read to them. Below you will find some of my favorite book with a Wild West theme.
Staring the Decode This Code Activity
After reading them a book or two you can pass out one of the break the code sheets and cowboy print pencilcowboy themed pencils. (You don’t have to use decorated pencils, but your kids would probably love them.
Then your children can decode the words. They may not be familiar with all of the words. You may need to explain what some of them mean to your children. Other words may be found in the books you have read to them. That is one of the reasons I suggested that you read your children a book or two before they start code breaking.
Finally, your children can color in the decode this code pictures if they like. The pictures are small. It would probably be best to have your children color the pictures with color pencils.
