The I Spy Election Day Symbols set comes with two types of data-gathering worksheets. First, there is a worksheet that invites children to gather data with tally marks. Second, there is a worksheet that asks children to record their data with numbers.
The data children will be gathering is the number of times each of the I Spy Election Day Symbols appears on the page. Each features seven symbols. The symbols range from animals for two main political parties to people voting.
If your children aren’t familiar with Election Day and voting, the set also comes with vocabulary flashcards. There are B/W and color flashcards available in the set. Going over the cards before starting an I Spy page is something you will probably want to do.
Building Background
Before exploring these voting activities, you may want to read your children a book about voting. Below you will find several books about voting that would be great to read to your children.

Rock That Vote is a book about a class voting for a class pet. It also focuses on the need to vote fairly.

Duck for President explores the main character’s rise in power from farmer to running for president.
Grace for President explores the difference between the popular and electoral vote. It features a girl running for president of her class.
Getting the I Spy Election Day Symbols Set
First, you will need to download the set.
Second, if you don’t have Acrobat Reader you will need to download it. The set is an Acrobat Reader PDF file.
Third, you must go to your download file and open the page. You may be asked if you want the file to open right after you download it. You won’t have to hunt for it in your download file if you are.
Types of Worksheets
As it was mentioned above, there are two versions of the I Spy page. One asks children to record their answers with tally marks and one wants children to record with numerals. It will be up to you to decide which one you want them to work on.
Exploring the Flashcards
Some children haven’t had any experience with voting or Election Day. Going through one of the set of flashcards with them will help them in two ways. The first is that it will introduce them to symbols that appear on the worksheets. The second is they can be used a jumping-off point to having a discussion about voting and Election Day.
