Kids love to sing songs with hand motions or a puppet. The hand motions or puppet give kids something to do with their hands when they sing. I think puppets give shy kids the the opportunity to sing with something or through it. It takes their attention off of themselves and gives them something else to focus on. We recently made a triceratops paper bag puppets to go along with fun dinosaur songs.
Since we are home for the summer, we didn’t sing the songs with a group. What we did do was have our puppets was to read each of the songs and then sing them. It was counted as our summer reading time for the day.
How to Make the Puppet
The puppet we made is a tradition paper bag puppet. Green and white pieces of construction paper have been cut out to fit over different areas of a paper bag.
What pieces make up the puppet:
- Long body piece that fits under the the flap on the front of the bag and reaches down the the bottom of the bag. You can trace around this section of the bag onto the green construction.
- Two pieces that are a little longer than the bag’s flap were cut out. One piece had a pointed end and one was just rounded. Those areas can also be traced on to paper green construction paper
- A fan piece for the back
- Three horns cut of of white paper.
- Two round eyes were cut out of white paper
- Two small black round pieces were cut out
Before the green construction paper pieces were glued in place,we traced their edges with a black marker. Then we sponge painted them with blue, brown, and green paint. Sponge painting gave the triceratops some texture.
When the paint had dried, we were ready to start gluing the pieces in place. All of the green sections were glued on first. Then the horns and eyes were added. When the glue had dried we were reading to start singing dinosaur songs.
