I found this huge mushroom in my front yard. It looks a lot like a brain to me. The corpus callosum is missing from the mushroom. It makes it hard to see the right and left hemispheres clearly. The rippled effect one sees in brains is most easily seen on the edges of the mushroom.
What do you think? Does it look like a brain to you?

very cool looking mushroom… looks a little like uncooked bread dough to me… but a brain is cool too
wow, that is a huge mushroom!
It’s so sad when a perfectly good monster is coming over to play but loses his brain on the way. I hate when that happens.
It DOES look very much like a brain!
That is a big one. It does look a lot like a brain as well
It really does look like a brain!
What a weird mushroom!
Have a great Wednesday!

I think you know an awful lot about brains! 😀 But truthfully, I think it looks like a rock. 😉
When I had my knee replacement surgery in 2001 my brother from Ohio came to visit me and take me to Dr. appointments. My sister came from South Carolina and my brother from Florida. Brother from Ohio found these in our yard. They are huge mushrooms and look like big balls. When they are fresh they are perfectly round. He brought it inside and sliced it , dipped the slices in egg and crushed crakers and fried them in butter. Oh my goodness, it was so good.
I have only seen it one more time in my yard.. They only appear in the fall, Sept/Oct. So maybe this mushroom is the kind that my brother found.. It does look like a brain..Is it right brained or left brained… I like what Varunner had to say.she is so funny~! lol
Wow! I’m with you, that totally looks like a big brain!
Yes it does! I agree with you!
Okay, that has GOT to be the coolest mushroom ever!!!
How cool. We have tons of those in our yard, but none shaped quite like this.

I’ve been finding some similar to that in our yard too, especially after the rains!
A brain was my first thought. Crazy!
It does look like a brain. Are you sure it isn’t some kind of Halloween trick?
It definitely looks freaky!
It looks a bit like a sea sponge, but I can see the brain too.
Ew. It totally looks like a brain. My kids would think that was so cool!
Yes it does . Freaky mushroom. Neat .
That Freaky Mushroom looks big enough to have been grown in Texas! Imagination…a wonderful thing…and you got it!
Definitely a brain 🙂
It totally does look like a brain! That is so fun. I wish I knew more about which mushrooms were safe to eat, because I love ’em. Even if they do look like brains!
wow!

Weird! It really looks like a fossilized brain. LOL
That’s perfect for Halloween!
What an exciting find. You should put it in a specimen jar for Halloween.
It certainly does look like a brain! What a great chuckle for the evening. So glad you shared this!
Whoa! That is a pretty big looking mushroom! You should put something next to it so we can campare the size of this thing 🙂 It does look like a piece of a brain. Or it could be a shell of some sort and once you flip it over you’ll find a freaky looking creature with little legs!
Totally looks like a brain! That’s a serious mushroom. I can’t recall seeing one like that in a residential setting…
It does!
Are you sure that is a mushroom???? LOL! It is a fantastic looking brain! Great post! You made me smile! 🙂

That does totally look like a brain.
My kids would love to see that in our yard, instead all they see is leaves, leaves and more leaves!
Hee heeee, that’s such a weird mushroom! We get something like that, but it’s red and smells like something’s dead. Yours is MUCH more pleasant.
That does look like a brain!
Yes.
Very brainesque.
=)
For sure I see BRAINNNNNSSSSSSSSSSSSS!
I’m voting for fungus! PLEASE let it be just a fungus!
Yes – you have a brain in your yard!!
I hate mushrooms growing in my yard! They’re such a pain to get rid of.
It does kinda look like a brain though!
Very, very strange ad freaky! Totally is time for Halloween! 🙂
That is definitely Abby Normal’s brain. La
WOW that is one odd looking mushroom (LOL) I have never seen anything like this before I wonder what kind of mushroom it is.
This is really weird. You should see the fungus that came up in my backyard. It looked like the devil’s tongue. Sort of gross. Did this turn into anything? An ugly weed popped up where mine was. ~Ames
What did JDaniel think of it? My three-year-old was quite puzzled when we bought mushrooms at the store. “Are these the not poisonous kind?”
or a pile of dough! Hmmm, I had some big weird mushrooms in my backyard this year, the squirrels hated them (that was fun to watch) – must have been a good year for fungus!!!
It does look like a brain! A perfect Halloween ‘f’ post. Thanks for sharing.
WOW that does look similar to a brain.
That is yucky! Totally looks like a brain. I would be getting the spray out for that thing and the elbow length yard gloves bwahahaha!
Oh it does look more like a brain than a mushroom!
That might actually be the brain of a MUCH bigger mushroom…hmmmm…freaky…

I thought it was a rock from the sea. That’s such a huge mushroom!
Wow. That mushroom sure does look like a brain! What is it? Have you found it in any book? Could it be some kind of giant puffball? If so they are edible as long as the interior is white. But don’t take my word for it ask someone who really knows local fungi to look at it.
I found photoss of similar mushrooms in The Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Mushrooms. page 821, item #648
Best wishes,

Thanks heavens you found it!!!!
I’ve been wondering where I lost mine!
What a cute link to Alphabe-Thursday’s letter “F”!
This really made me smile!
Thanks for a fun stop this week! And please be careful with my brain. You may have to wrap it in bubble wrap before you ship it back to me!
A+
It appears to be a puffball fungus. If it is fresh – that is – white and firm on the inside tissue – it is yummy, when sliced and fried in butter and garlic. But you do need to find out for certain if it is a puffball. The species is called “Lycoperdales”, if you choose to look it up for images and info online. We have a lot of them around the Pacific Northwest during early Autumn. If it is a genuine puffball, they are no good once the insides begin to rot (ick). But if it is not a puffball – then look out for hungry zombies. Maybe toss it to them to throw them off the attack. Hope this helps. (Even if it IS a real puffball, some nearsighted zombies are distracted by them, since they think that it is a genuine mind.)
