I cringe when I realize I have said something negative. Why? I heard a long time ago for every negative comment said to someone they will have to hear five positive comments. I think it is important for us to share this fact with our children. This kindness activity can be used to help children understand the impact of their words. I made a kindness activity printable to go along with a few other activities.
Kindness Activity
Discussing Positive and Negative Comments
Before you share the Kind Word Printable with your children, you will want to help them brainstorm some positive and negative comments. You may want to ask them just how each type of comment made them feel after they have shared it. Your children can use words to share how they felt or demonstrate it with their body language.
If you have noticed that they have been using more negative comments about themselves and others, you may want to help them focus on positive comments they could say. This kindness activity shouldn’t be a way they learn more harsh or negative things to say.
Reading Books with Positive Comments
Reading your children a book that is focused on positive comments and kindness can help them wrap their minds around the impact of kind words. Here are some books that would be great to share with your children:

Completing the Kind Words Printable
The first thing your children will notice on the printable is that each row starts with a negative or sad face. Next, they will probably notice that there are five positive or happy faces in each row. Finally, as they color in the faces, they will notice that they have a lot of coloring to do to fill in all the happy faces.
Although only five negative, bad, or mean comments were made, a lot of happy faces have to be colored to equal their effect. Please point out that five positive comments balance out one negative, they don’t reach beyond it. It would take six or more positive comments to outweigh just one negative comment.
