While it is fun to build with LEGO, they are also a great math tool. (You will find a number of math activities with LEGO at the bottom of this post.) This activity features 2×2 LEGO bricks. It will give your children the opportunity to work on number recognition and counting skills. Your children will need to place the correct number of 2×2 LEGO bricks on each of the squares displayed on each math valentine number mat.
Reading Before You Start the Activity
I like to introduce an activity by reading my children a book that focuses on the activity’s theme. Below you will find some of my favorite Valentine’s Day themed books.

Getting Ready for the Math Valentine Counting Activity
Getting the Mats Ready
First, you will need to download the LEGO Math Valentine Counting Activity printable set.
Then you can open the set with Acrobat Reader.
Next, you can print out the pages on a color printer.
Finally, you will need to cut each of the pages in half. (There are two number activity mats on each page.)
Hint: If you want to use the mats over and over again you will want to cover them with plastic.

Exploring the Math Valentine Counting Activity
There are so many ways you can explore the number mats in this activity. Below you will find some of the ways we have come up with.
- First, you can place the mats out in a center or the kitchen table along with some counters. Your children can work on them on their own.
- Second, you can sit with your child or children help them figure out how many objects or counter to place on each mat. You may want to encourage your child to count out loud. You will then be able to hear if they skip a number as they count.
- Third, you could have children work through the number mats with a partner. The partner can double-check their work by counting the objects they placed on the mat.
