We took JDaniel to a drive thru living nativity on Friday. He loved the camels at the beginning. He really loved the sheep and donkeys that surrounded Mary and Joseph. JDaniel also like the huge horses the Roman Centurions were riding. Although we read him all the signs that were posted on the route, talked about the people in each setting, and pointed out the large star over the manger all he seemed to notice were the animals. Yesterday we asked him about what he saw and according to him animals were there. Maybe next year he will get the Bible story too.

The Fairytale Collection CD Review and Giveaway
I love to listen to radio plays. The old ones like the Lone Ranger and the more recent ones like Guy Noir on A Prairie Home Companion. The sound effects and inflections of people’s voices allow me to paint pictures in my mind of the stories and their characters. I was recently granted the opportunity to listen to The Fairytale Collection CD by The 6 Pence Players. It is a really fun CD filled with five fairytales that have had a modern twist added to them. The wicked stepsisters are offered a job at a traveling shoe store at the end of Cinderella. The Three Billy Goats met a very interesting troll with hearing problems. I shared a copy of the CD with my sister, a school librarian. She was impressed with the diversity and creativity readers had in their voices. She really enjoyed the CD too.
The stories are told by children and are for children age 3-8 or anyone that loves a good story. I have heard a number of music CD’s that contain children’s voices. I haven’t heard any that had children acting on them. This makes the CD’s even more fun for children.
Let me tell you a little about the creator of this innovative CD. Her name is Lynn Llewelyn Penny. She is an actress and mother of four girls. She is founder of 6 Pence Productions in Hendersonville, N.C. which produces audio entertainment for children and 6 Pence Players, a troupe of young actors, ages 5 to 17. Prior to starting 6 Pence, she worked at as a voice talent in national ad campaigns, on T.V. and in movies, and acted in regional theatre. Lynn holds a BFA in Theater from Southern Methodist and studied in a graduate program at Florida State University. She also attended the Burt Reynolds Institute for Theatre Training.
This CD was designed to be used with children during quiet times at home, classrooms, or preschools. This would be great to have during a long car trip. It would also be a great teaching tool for students who will be performing their own reader’s theater productions in class.
If you are interested in purchasing one, please go to 6 Pence Productions website. The CD retails for $14.95.

Bouncing Place Visit- One Was Too Young and the Other Too Weak
JDaniel and I went to Monkey Joe’s a local bouncy house place on Wednesday. He had a great time circling the arcade games and getting to dunk a basket ball another child let him use. He had fun bouncing and going down the slides too. It was the games that he really liked to watch light up. I guess he wasn’t really ready for the bouncy activities yet. I may not have been ready yet either. I think it will be more fun for me when I don’t have to carry or shove up ramps a thirty one pound toddler.
I glad it was half price day!
Giving Your Child the Gift of Sleep- Five Tips
We had a little bit of a car ride back from visiting my in-laws yesterday and got home just past JDaniel’s bed time. He was wide awake. Rather than rush him off to bed and have him cry and cry, I decided to stick with his regular sleep routine.
What do I do?
1.We go upstairs and take a bath every other night.
2.I put on his sleeper suit and he selects a pacifier for the night.
3.We go into the bathroom and he brushes his teeth. Then I brush his teeth.
4.My husband, JDaniel and I watch Curious George during the week and Bob the Builder on weekends. (PBS airs different shows on weekends.)
5.We read two or three books as a family.
6.I carry him to bed and give him his blessing. (I say, “Mommy loves you, Daddy loves you, and God loves you. May God bless you with the sleep you need and someday welcome you into His Kingdom.”)
What are some sleep tips?
•Keeping a routine for JDaniel has been key to his getting good sleep.
•Giving him time to wind down after running around really seems to prepare him for rest. (We read books and watch Curious George to do that.)
•I have kept his bed clear of stuff .(toys, books, blankets) He does have extra pacifiers in his crib.
•I reassure him with his blessing as I put him into his crib that sleep is a good thing.
•I don’t rush in if he cries during the night. He sometimes wakes up for a minute or two and then goes back to sleep. If I rush in, he is up for hours.

Christmas Breakfast- Muffin Tin Monday
This week’s theme is Christmas breakfast. I decided to read JDaniel the book Cock-A-Doodle Christmas by Will Hillenbrand and base most of his breakfast on the book. Before I describe his tin, let me tell you about this great book. The main character in the book is a rooster named Harold who lives in Bethlehem. Harold is given the job of waking up the animals in the morning by Old Rooster when Old Rooster retires and moves down the road to his sister’s farm. Harold doesn’t feel up to the job. He, in fact, doesn’t cock-a-doodle-do loud enough for several days he is on the job and all the animals are late getting their work done. One evening a young woman expecting a baby and her husband come to rest in the stable. That night Harold sees a bright star, he hears voices in the distance rejoicing in song, and shepherds come to worship the baby. Harold wonders what is going on. He hears a shepherd say that Good News is here. He hears that that is hope for a new day. He doesn’t understand. He turns to a baby and sees love and understanding. Harold feels a special joy and understands that his life will never be the same again. He next day he can’t wait to share it. Harold says, “Cock-A- Doodle Doo! Good News for You!” He says it aloud as he can.
Daniel had a mixed tin. He had chocolate chip muffins that represent the sweetness of Harold’s message. He had Golden Grahams to represent the rough cloth the baby would be wrapped in. He had the boiled egg to represent the bright shining star. He had apple and butternut squash yogurt to represent the vegetables the animals would have eaten. He had the reindeer pear because I thought it would be cute. It doesn’t fit in the story in any way.
Thrifty Holiday Spending- Reusable Bags for Giving, Shopping, and More
Reusable bags might be a great gift for someone on your list. You might want to include a gift card to the store printed on the bag. I have even given gifts in decorative ones. If the person is very green friendly, they love that the can use them again.
I take the reusable grocery bags everywhere. We use them whenever we go shopping even if it isn’t for groceries. We take them to the library to carry books. We pack toys in them when we travel. We take them to the pool when we go to the Y. They are great for wet suits and towels. JDaniel even used one decorated with Frankenstein for his Halloween bag.
I try to keep some in the trunk of the car and some in the kitchen. JDaniel knows right where they are. If I tell him we need one, he goes off and gets one. Sometimes he doesn’t bring them to me. When he doesn’t bring one, I know I will find him standing at the door to the garage with one over his shoulder ready to go.
Some stores will give you credit for bringing your own bags. Target and Bi-Lo take money off for each bag you bring. I love seeing five cents taken off my total for each bag at Bi-Lo.
Veggie Tales DVD Giveaway
I came across this really fun Veggie Tales DVD called The Star of Christmas. It is a great story that has Bob and Larry putting together a Christmas musical called “The Princess and the Plumber”. Unfortunately they have competition for an audience. As with all the Veggie Tales, there are a lot of fun hijinks going on.
This giveaway begins November 25th and ends December 9th at 11:59 p.m.
What do you need to do to get the DVD?

Alouette Sundried Tomato and Basil Cheese Review
I was sent a coupon to get a free container of Alouette Cheese as member of She Speaks. Cheese is a favorite of everyone in my house.
We tend to buy hard cheese for snacking and cooking. The sundried tomato and basil soft cheese we tried from Alouette was really good though. It has a strong sundried tomato flavor that was great with whole grain crackers.
I tried spreading it on salmon just prior to cooking it. I thought it would melt and leave behind a nice tomato basil flavor. It actually didn’t leave any noticeable flavor. I will need to work on how to best work with the Alouette Cheese in cooking.
It has flavor that would be good on so many things. They have a website of recipes. I think I will start there.
Lessons from Homework
I had a parent few years ago who had a limited reading ability. She was a very humble woman. Each night that I sent home an assignment she didn’t understand she would call me at school. She checked over her son’s assignments as soon as he walked in the door. If he couldn’t remember what he was supposed to do or she didn’t understand any of the words on the assignment, she called me by 3:30 p.m. I was still there at 3:30 p.m. and could easily give her the help she needed.
I had another parent about fifteen years ago who would send in a homework assignment back undone. She would tack on a note saying her son said he couldn’t do it independently so, she didn’t make him do it. I would start each morning going over his homework and having him do it. He could do it. He just needed someone to point him in the right direction.
Guess which parent was telling their child school and learning were important.
