Taking Take Lessons from Books- My Teacher Sleeps at School

My Teacher Sleeps at School is an awesome book! The students in the class see the teacher bring in a bag of food and a pillow and conclude that the teacher lives at school.Later in the book she takes her class to her house to see where she lives. As a first grader my class went to have lunch at my teacher’s apartment on the way back from a field trip. I remember being in awe as I sat in her living room and listening to her read Winnie the Pooh to us while she sat in her own rocking chair.

When I ran into students, they were always surprised to see me out of school. I think they assumed I slept at school too. What do your children think about their teacher’s lives? I bet they could write a funny story about their teachers using the facts they know about them.

Favorite Books

I have struggled all day with what book I would write about as my favorite. I love reading the Bible especially the book of Ruth. I loved reading the Anne of Green Gables books, Mr. Popper’s Penguins, and the Mouse in the Motorcycle when I was little. I learned a lot from Lucy Caulkins’ book The Art of Teaching Writing as a classroom teacher. I read my class The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe every year in school. (My second and third graders loved it.) As an adult I have read hundreds of books I really enjoyed. I loved the books by Jan Evanovich, David Baldacci, John Grisham, Brian Haig, Joanne Fluke, and Jasper Fforde. Every year I read at least one non-fiction book that is good for me. I call them “high fiber” books. I learned a lot from the books Founding Brothers, Love and Respect, and Farther Than Any Man: The Rise and Fall of Captain James Cook.

What did I decide is my favorite book? Right now JDaniel and I read Cars and Trucks and Things That Go by Richard Scarry every day. We look for gold bug. We talk about all the vehicles and the noises they make. Then when we get in the car to go places, we keep our eyes out for the vehicles we have read about. Today we searched for backhoes. I just read Moe’s Café. It really got me thinking about communicating with God and my spouse. It would be my new favorite book.

Caught Playing Peek-a- Boo with JDaniel outside a Hotel

One of my sister-in-laws was trying to entertain JDaniel as he sat in his car seat waiting to for us to take him home by playing peek-a-boo with him.

She would duck down below the car windows and pop up. He loved it. Things were going great until she moved around to the right side of the car. She was just getting ready to pop up on the right side of the car when a lady she knew walked up to her.

 “Peek-a-boo, I can see you,” the lady said. My sister in-law handled the situation with the grace and dignity that only someone squatting beside a car can. She said, “I’m just playing with my nephew in the car,” as she slowly stood up. “ I thought it was something like that,” the lady said.

Taking Lessons from Books- The Wall

The Wall by Eve Bunting is an amazing story about a father taking his son to meet his grandfather’s name on the Vietnam Veteran’s Wall in Washington. He tells him about his grandfather. The boy and his father get to meet other people who are visiting the wall and talk about tributes people that have left there. This is hard book to read and not cry through.

 It is an important book to read. People need to remember those who have fought for our country. Even if you don’t believe in the wars they fought in they definitely earned the right to be remembered.

Take the time to write a soldier overseas, to call a grandparent and thank them for serving, to listen to someone you know tell you about their service. My sister and brother in-law are currently in the military. My father in-law and paternal grandfather served in World War II. Each of them was proud to serve our country.

I bet you have people you know that would love to be remembered.

Holding Hands When You Pray Can be Slimy

My husband and I hold hands when we pray before dinner. JDaniel has seen us do it for months. He reached over a month ago to hold hands with his grandfather during a prayer and then didn’t look like he was going to repeat it. Recently I felt a little hand covered in spaghetti reach over from his high chair and tug at my sleeve during the pre-meal prayer. When I looked up, there was a bright red hand covered in noodles. I had to take hold of it. It was the right thing to do. It was a little difficult to concentrate while praying with food mushing in my hand.

There wasn’t anything better than JDaniel wanting to join in our thankfulness for the food we are about to eat and that he has already started eating. Last night he added his own “Amen” at the end of the prayer. It was the most precious thing.

Expired Coupons for Military Families Overseas

I read a blog entry on Southern Savers during the summer about sending expired coupons to military bases overseas. She decided to adopt a base in Gaeta,Italy. Apparently they are able to use them for up to six months past the expiration date on the coupon at their commissaries. Today JDaniel and I went to the post office to send off coupons gathered by my Alpha Delta Kappa sorority chapter to send to same base. Mommyhood Moment-The Tale of Two Haircuts

I have been trimming JDaniel’s hair for months. I just cut his curls off the collar of his pajamas, his bangs and the little wisps of hair that hang over his ears after he has a bath. Today I decided to take him for his first haircut to a hair salon for kids. They advertise that the first haircut is only one penny. He loved waiting for his turn while sitting in a motorcycle chair and looking around at the toys in the waiting area. When it was his turn, I was asked if a pair of scissors had ever touched his head. Yes, I admitted. He has had a trim now and then but, he has never had a haircut. Well, then he isn’t eligible for the 1 cent cut. His haircut will be seventeen dollars I was told. I am a cheap as they come as you will read in the next paragraph, but I did splurge. JDaniel had his hair cut in the racecar chair where he could watch a movie on a monitor. He was so good about the whole thing. That is until the stylist took out the trimmer to go around his ears. The sound really bothered him. JDaniel is going to be going to a family wedding in two weeks and now he looks amazingly cute.

The second hair cut is the frugal one. It isn’t as frugal as it could have been. On the way back from JDaniel’s haircut I saw a sign in front of the vocational high school in town. The sign advertised haircuts for four dollars. I have to admit I seriously thought about it. I just need to have my hair trimmed about an inch. Instead I went and paid eight dollars and fifty cents to a local hairstyling franchise in town. Their haircuts are usually I little more than that, but I had a coupon on the back of my Bi-Lo grocery store receipt for a discounted haircut. Honestly I don’t look nearly as amazingly cute as JDaniel, but it was the right price for what I had done.

Mommyhood Moments- Decorating the Kitchen with Oatmeal

JDaniel has decided that he is ready to feed himself oatmeal in the morning. He tries to use a spoon to eat and when he gets tired or frustrated with it he moves to his hands. I am pretty sure oatmeal shouldn’t be eaten with your hands. By the time he has finished eating he has oatmeal hanging from his chin, on the tip of his nose, up and down his sleeves, all over the highchair, on the floor, and somehow on back on his pajamas ( I don’t know how it get on his bottom.) I literally strip him down to his diaper in the kitchen so that oatmeal doesn’t fall off of him as he leaves the kitchen. Self-feeding is a great developmental step. I just don’t know why it has to redecorate my kitchen.
