A Family New Year’s Eve Party
Kate H. is my youngest sister. She is the mother of two, an adjunct college instructor, war veteran, and so much more. She is very creative. I thought you would enjoy hearing about how she celebrates New Year’s Eve with her family and friends.
Last year I used a cut-out Snowman from a Holiday card and we played secret snowman where the kids try to secretly attach the snowman (I put strong tape on the back) to someone. If the person notices them they need to try another person. It was great fun. The kids could not keep a straight face, but the adults pretended not to notice when the snowman was stuck to their backs. (This year the kids got Operation, and I Spy board game and Farmyard Uno so we will probably stick with board games.)
As 8 p.m. approached we break out the tacky paper hats and noise makers. I found some plastic champagne glasses at a discount store and we serve sparkling grape juice.
We have a battery operated clock in our kitchen which I take down and reset the time to make 8 pm turn magically into midnight. At midnight we toast each other and shout Happy New Year. This year I think we will make confetti because Charlie’s teacher said he needs to practice cutting.
Lessons Taken From Books- Christmas Day in the Morning
Christmas Day in the Morning is a beautiful book by Pearl Buck with gorgeous illustrations by Mark Buehner. The story takes place on a dairy farm. A boy named Rob and his father have to get up early every morning to milk the cows. One morning he overhears his father tell his mother he wishes he could let Rob sleep in. This tells Rob how much his father loves him. The boy decides he want to do something special for his dad for Christmas. Rob decides that if he gets up early and milks the cows, his father will get time to rest. That is exactly what he does and in doing so he gives his dad the best gift of all his love.
What can you do to show the ones that you love how much your care between now and the New Year?
Watching My Toddler Play is Fascinating!
JDaniel and I attended a birthday party for Jesus today thrown by the Upstate Christian Moms Group. We listen to the Christmas story. (I listened and he tried to wiggle out of my lap.) We ate cake and sang “Happy Birthday too. The best part of the party was watching JDaniel play in the nursery. He took care of a baby doll in a highchair. JDaniel brought a plate with food and fed the baby with a fork. He got a cup and held it up to the doll’s mouth. Finally he cooked a meal in the microwave. He placed a plate with a piece of play bread in the microwave. Before he could close the door he hesitated a moment and reached for another plate to put on top of the bread. (I cover everything that goes in the microwave too.) After closing the door, he punched the paper buttons on the microwave. There must not have been enough numbers punched. JDaniel had to go back and punch some more numbers.
I was supposed to being visiting with the other mothers at the party. I had so much fun watching JDaniel pretend to be a mommy or daddy I really didn’t say much to the other mothers. I just love to watch my son do new things!
Holidays are a Time for Family Storytelling- Mommyhood Tip
We went to visit with my in-laws recently. I was able to spend the large part of an afternoon talking with my mother in-law. She told me stories about raising her five children. Then she focused on the various girlfriends and boyfriends each had brought home to meet her and my father in-law. I have heard many of the stories before. This time she focused on my husband’s more than she had before. She said that each one seemed nice, but after a visit or two they never came back. “You were the one that keep coming back!” she said. It was wonderful to hear her retell the events that lead up to my getting to join her family.
I hope you will take time to listen to family stories from your aunts, uncles, mom, dad or grandparents this year.
The Fairytale Collection CD Review and Giveaway
I love to listen to radio plays. The old ones like the Lone Ranger and the more recent ones like Guy Noir on A Prairie Home Companion. The sound effects and inflections of people’s voices allow me to paint pictures in my mind of the stories and their characters. I was recently granted the opportunity to listen to The Fairytale Collection CD by The 6 Pence Players. It is a really fun CD filled with five fairytales that have had a modern twist added to them. The wicked stepsisters are offered a job at a traveling shoe store at the end of Cinderella. The Three Billy Goats met a very interesting troll with hearing problems. I shared a copy of the CD with my sister, a school librarian. She was impressed with the diversity and creativity readers had in their voices. She really enjoyed the CD too.
The stories are told by children and are for children age 3-8 or anyone that loves a good story. I have heard a number of music CD’s that contain children’s voices. I haven’t heard any that had children acting on them. This makes the CD’s even more fun for children.
Let me tell you a little about the creator of this innovative CD. Her name is Lynn Llewelyn Penny. She is an actress and mother of four girls. She is founder of 6 Pence Productions in Hendersonville, N.C. which produces audio entertainment for children and 6 Pence Players, a troupe of young actors, ages 5 to 17. Prior to starting 6 Pence, she worked at as a voice talent in national ad campaigns, on T.V. and in movies, and acted in regional theatre. Lynn holds a BFA in Theater from Southern Methodist and studied in a graduate program at Florida State University. She also attended the Burt Reynolds Institute for Theatre Training.
This CD was designed to be used with children during quiet times at home, classrooms, or preschools. This would be great to have during a long car trip. It would also be a great teaching tool for students who will be performing their own reader’s theater productions in class.
If you are interested in purchasing one, please go to 6 Pence Productions website. The CD retails for $14.95.

Trusting Someone Else’s Plan through Prayer
We just got back from visiting my in-laws in Georgia. They are such an amazing couple. My father in-law’s health has been failing and he had to move to a hospital area in their retirement community until he gets stronger. He really wants to come home. JDaniel2 works hard every day to walk more, eat better, and rest. He has had heart problems for a long time and we don’t know how long we will have him. It doesn’t seem to faze him. He is motivated to gain strength. It was amazing watch my mother in-law interact with him. She just loves on him. She told me today she knows God has his own timeline for her JDaniel2. I pray that God gives JDaniel4 and I more time to get to know him. We are late comers to the family and JDaniel isn’t old enough to have memories of his own of his grandfather yet.
This week I have heard about two babies dying (one in utro and one less than a month old), visited a very special man I don’t want to die yet, and struggled to understand God’s hand in all of it. I know he has a plan. I know I can’t control his plan. I know I have to trust in his plan.
If you get a chance, please pray for my friends C and H who lost babies and JDaniel2 this week.
