Books about firefighters have always been a hit with JDaniel. Your children probably love them too. This fun STEAM activity for kids would be fun to explore after your children’s favorite books about firefighters. (If they don’t have favorites yet, you will find a list of ours at the end of this post.)

Putting the STEAM Activity Together
Making the Firefighter
You can have your children decorate the uncolored version of the firefighter or decorate the firefighter that is colored in.
If the arms of their firefighter seem to need support, your children can tape popsicle sticks to the back of them.
Next, children will need to cut their straw into two pieces. They will then tape the two pieces vertically parallel to each other on the back of the snowman.
Then thread each of the ends of the cord or ribbon through the top the straws. That will create a loop above the straws.
Building a Ladder
Your children create a ladder for the firefighter to pretend to climb. They will first need to draw sections of a ladder on a cereal box. Then they will need to cut the sections. Finally, the can glue the pieces of the ladder together.
Once your ladder has been completed, you can tape it to the door or cabinet the firefighter is going to climb.
Making the Firefighter Climb
Children will need to place the loop at the top of their twine or ribbon on a door or cabinet knob.
They will slowly alternate pulling one cord and then the other with a rocking motion to make the firefighter rise up the twine or cord. It will look like the firefighter is climbing.
You can explain to your children that this is how a pulley works!
