At the library last week JDaniel and I picked up the book When the Wind Blew. It looked like the perfect book to welcome March with. After all March has a 50-50 chance of entering like a lion. That means lots of wind, rain or even snow. Of course it could enter like a lamb! Days of sunshine and warming weather. Long ago JDaniel and I made paper plate lions and lambs to welcome March. Over the weekend we made a new lion and lamb paper plate crafts. I thought I would share the book we now love and our new plate crafts with your.
Let me start by telling you about the book The Wind BlewThe old woman who lived in a shoe run from place to place helping other nursery rhyme characters after a big wind blows. I just love the message found near the end of the book. It says that she and her children looked at the cost a grasping for things that are lost.
Lion and Lamb Crafts
The lamb paper plate craft is made with copy paper and black construction paper along with a paper plate. Here are the steps we used to make the lamb.
- Copy paper was folded in half long ways and then cut into two long strips.
- Small strips were cut out of the long strips vertically.
- The small strips were curled by rubbing the inside edge of a pair of scissors. (If you have young children, you will want to curl the strips for them.)
- A nose was cut out of black paper.
- The white outer eye and black inner eye were also cut out of paper.
- The eyes and nose were glued into place
- A number curls were glued around the outside edge of the paper in a complete circle. A small arch of curls were glued above the lamb’s eyes.
The lion is simple to put together too. Here are the steps we used to make the lion:
- Use a hole punch to make holes alternating between a hole near the edge of the plate and one as far in as the hole punch will reach.
- Thread yarn up and down through the holes. You will go around the plate twice to make the lion’s main. The second time around you will go up each hole you went down the first time. Then tie the two ends of the yarn together.
- Cut out eyes and nose with attached mouth out of black construction paper.
- Glue the eyes and nose onto the paper plate.
We are hoping March come in like a lamb this year! You will find more art projects for kids on my Crafts for Kids board and Paper Plate Crafts board on Pinterest.
