JDaniel and I read a number of books on manners this week. Some got to read only once and then were taken back to the library quickly. Why did they go back so quickly? Many of the books on manners spent the first half of the book describing bad manners and they spent the second half of the book pointing out good manners. When you have a little boy who doesn’t miss anything, he picks up as much on what he shouldn’t be doing as much as what he should. Some books covered things he hadn’t thought of yet. I skipped over those new ideas.

There were two really good ones we read. Do Unto Otters: A Book About Manners by Laurie Keller and D.W.’s Guide to Perfect Manners by Marc Brown. Do Unto Otters: A Book About Manners had too many words for JDaniel to sit through. I did picture walk through him and tell him the manners the rabbit wanted his new neighbors the otters to have. D.W.’s Guide to Perfect Manners is right about his alley. It highlights a lot of good manners and mentions a few bad manners to avoid and why.
After reading D.W.’s Guide to Perfect Manners, we made Arthur puppets with paper plates and had them practice the good manner.
Can you tell which one JDaniel made?

Love those puppets. My boys were big Arthur fans when they were younger.
I think that is so true that you should not point out the bad manners first! How we all could use a touch up on our manners. Joni
Love the Arthur puppets! What a good idea.
Isn’t it funny how boys always seem to ferret out the ideas for bad manners?
Thanks for dropping by Little Sealed Packages.
Cute Arthur puppets! I remember my older kids reading and watching Arthur.
And I agree little ones do tend to pick up the “bad” manners easier than the good ones lol!
How funny, we have a “No” and “yes” book and I had the same “problem” – worried that Red Ted would suddenly pick up on all “no” things as somthing fun he can get up to!!!
Thanks for the recommendations and love the plates! Had to look twice to see who made which one 😉
Yeah, I hate it when I have to add narration like, “And that is an example of how we DON’T act.” 🙂 Cute puppets.
Yes, WHY is it that most books show bad manners? I agree – my girls don’t need any new ideas. Do Unto Otters looks adorable – I’ll have to check it out.
It did make me laugh that he might be picking up the bad examples! 🙂
We absolutely loved DW Guide – it’s such a nice and positive book. I have to pull it off the shelf again. And I agree with you on some of the books that seem to “promote” bad behavior – I love “How Do Dinosaurs” series, but this is my main beef about them.
Arthur is always a hit around here, too. I agree it is hard to find a good book about manners.
I love your Arthur puppets! They are so cute.
We read Do Unto Otters about a year ago and my kids weren’t really interested. I’ll have to revisit it. I love the DW Guide too!
Cute puppets =)
I left you something over on my blog today. =)
They turned out so cute. I bet he had fun playing with them.
I often take liberties with books with too many words for young readers too. Some books have such beautiful illustrations to simply pass.
Those sound like great books!
Those Arthur puppets are so cute. They would be a huge hit here!
I’ve read that CW book, and really liked it. I laughed out loud that your son would get some bad ideas from these manners books. Mine would too!
Those are adorable books. We have a couple of manner books with Elle the Elephant learning her magic words!
