We have had a lot of rain and then blazing heat days here lately. Coming up some kindergarten games that could be played in the coolness of our garage seemed like a necessity! So I took a roll of masking tape into the garage and created a tape web that we could use to work on sight words and other kindergarten skills JDaniel has worked on this year.
The next step was to create some printable spiders with spaces on their backs for sight words and other concepts in Paint. Once a spider was developed, I copy pasted four spiders onto page. This gave us small spiders, but I think they were big enough for words to be written on them. If you would like a copy of the Sight_Word_Spiders, they are free for you to download.
Our spiders were glued on to file folders and then cut out to give them some support. Small washers were placed on the back of the spiders to insure that they would end up face up when dropped onto the web. (If you are not going to drop the spiders, you don’t have to add the washers.)
JDaniel walked around on the web and read me the words on the spiders. Some of the words have not come up yet in school. That was fine with me. I wanted to see if he could decode or sound out unknown words. It would be totally okay to select only words your child needed to review or all new words you could aide them in decoding.
Words that were more challenging tended to be picked up and sounded out. Others were just looked down on. There really isn’t a right or wrong way to have children in kindergarten games read words in my opinion. You could set up rules or guidelines before you started this learning game just has you may have for other kindergarten games. Deciding if you can only walk the tape line of the web or can walk anywhere on the web to the words would be something you might want to decide too.
More Kindergarten Games for the Tape Spider Web
The possibilities kindergarten games for this web are endless. Here are some other ideas I came up with:
- Have children write sight words on the the web with chalk or crayon. They can read the words as they write them.
- Play connect the spiders by drawing connecting lines from one spider to another.
- Crawl from one word to another like a spider.
- Use something other then sight words on the spiders. You could use number facts, money combinations or math symbols.
- Adding something to share after reading the word like the word’s vowel sound or a word that rhymes it would be fun.
