Explaining the Gingerbread Man

While most children will look at the upside-down gingerbread man and know it means the cup is upside down, others may be confused. The upside-down gingerbread man’s head is narrow. Its base is wide. There may be children that think that means the narrow cup base goes on the bottom. Please take a moment to explain this to them.

If they end up building structures that are the opposite of the card, you can decide if you want to correct them. It may be important to you that you build it just like the card. It may be important that they just practice cup stacking.

While you can truly use any type of cup that you like, it would be best to use cups that have sturdy sides. It will help the tall structures stay up. The cups you choose to use do not need to be expensive though. The size of the cup doesn’t matter either. I think small cups like shot cups work can well as tall cups. Children can work with them on their own, in pairs or as a group. If you use them with a group you may want to print them out on a poster printers and use large objects.

Exploring the Gingerbread Man Tens Frames

There are a number of ways to display the number featured on each mat. Below you will find several ways that the gingerbread tens frames can be used.

First, they can place the correct number of objects on each frame. Buttons, bottle caps, pebbles or any small object you have available to you.

Second, children can place a number tile or bottle cap with number written on them in each box in the frame they need to fill to represent that number.

Third, tally marks can be placed in the boxes to display the numbers that needed to count to the featured number.

Fourth, cubes and stacks of cubes can be placed in each box to display the number that would be in each part of the frame need to get to the featured number.

Using the Gingerbread Roll and Cover Mats

Once your children have a mat, some counters and a set of dice, they will be ready to get started. Below you will find the steps needed to play with the mats.

First your children will roll two die.
Second they will add the two numbers that appear on the top of dice.
Third they will cover the sum of the two number on the mats with a counter.
Finally, if they roll a sum that they already have covered they will roll again or you can have them add a second counter to the gingerbread man.

The story of the Gingerbread Man has been retold in a number of books. The Gingerbread Man retold by Jim Alyesworth is new to me. After seeing it on the Virtual Book Club list, I went to the library to check it out. What fun this version is! I love the storyline and the illustrations. I thought it would be fun to create finger puppets that could be used to retell or walk through the story.

Gingerbread Man Story Puppets that I made include the Gingerbread Man, the old women, the old man, and the fox. They appear is many of the other version that I have read. This set also includes the cow, the pig, and butcher mentioned in Jim Alyesworth’s version of the book. If you are exploring a different version of the story you can still use the first three or four puppets.

How You Can Use the Gingerbread Man Story Puppets

Before Reading the Gingerbread Man Story

You may want to share the puppets with your children before reading the book. Your children can share what they know about each of the characters. You can also have them predict what they will do in the story. It allows your kids to build a foundation for the story and share what they anticipate is going to happen.

During the Reading of the Gingerbread Man Story

You can pass out each of the puppets and have your children hold up their puppet when it appears in the book. If you’re reading the book to at a table, you can use the puppet speaking as pointed in the book.

After Reading the Gingerbread Man Story

You can have your children take turns use one of the puppets to retell the story. It might be fun to have your children retell the story based from the perspective of the puppet they have selected or have been given.
