Children will have fun watching carrots tops grow in bottle gardens. They will have fun watching the carrot top start to grow and sprout. This gardening project would be fun to start after reading the book The Tale of Peter RabbitorTops & Bottoms. Both books feature sneaky rabbits and gardens.
Getting Ready to Put Growing Carrot Tops Bottle Greenhouses Together
You will need to gather a few items before your children can put their greenhouse together.
Here is a list of what you will need:
- Duct Tape
- Scissors
- Plastic Juice Bottle
- Topsoil
- Carrot Tops with Leaves
- Water
Putting the Carrot Top Greenhouses Together
You will need to cut the plastic juice bottle into two sections. Older children can do this on their own. Younger children will need to have this done for them.
Next, the tops will need to be cut off of the carrots. (You can serve the bottom sections of the carrots as a snack.)
Then your children can place topsoil in the bottom section of the juice container.
Once they have enough topsoil in place, they will place the carrot into the soil. (We cover about half of the carrot section of the carrot top under the soil.
Then you will need to add a little water to the soil to firm it up. It is easier to tape the top section of the juice container on when the soil is wet.
Finally, you will duct tape the top section of the juice container to the top of the bottom section.
Taking Care of the Carrot Top Greenhouses
You will not need to add water often to the greenhouses. The water that is inside the bottle will be trapped when it tries to evaporate. The condensation that is formed by that water vapor will keep the soil moist.
