Something unique you love about your significant other.
When my husband and I were dating, we cooked a lot at each other’s houses. During the clean up after a dinner at his house one night, I rinsed the dishes and started putting them into the dishwasher. He commented on how I wasn’t putting them in correctly. Considering the fact that I have been loading dishwashers since I was a pre-teen I didn’t think that I was doing it wrong, but I stopped what I was doing to have him tell me what I was doing wrong just to see what he would say.
He began by pointing out there were very particular rules about placing items in the dishwasher.
Rule One
The eating surfaces of plates and bowls should face into the dishwasher.
I hadn’t thought about that but it makes sense.
Rule Two
Double check while you are placing items into the dishwasher to make sure they are completely clean. The dishwasher is really just for sterilizing the dishes and not cleaning them.
I have always really tried to do this. There have been instances that bits and small pieces of food have gotten past me.
Rule Three
Knives have to be placed in the outer cutlery bins to prevent you from accidently being cut by them when you release the metal latch that holds the bins closed which is located in the center of the dishwasher door.
Again I hadn’t thought about this, but it too makes sense.
Rule Four
Never over pack the washer racks it can cause dishes to clang against each other and chip.
I had never had this problem despite over packing for decades, but I noted it was a good rule.
After listening to each rule and having him show me how to load a dishwasher, there was only one response I could give that made sense. “You will be the king of the dishwasher,” I replied. “It will be your domain for as long as we live.” I’m not sure that is what he expected me to say, but it was a great response.
My husband is still king of the dishwasher. I load the dishes JDaniel and I use during the day as we use them but, the dinner dishes and pans are loaded by my husband. He takes the time to readjust the items I have put in if necessary before starting the washer.
Do I care that he rearranges things? Not one bit. My husband is king of the dishwasher and his reign over that domain is supreme.
Oh! The part I love best is that he does the dishes. I also love that he is man of details. Details are not my strong suit. I am so glad that they are his in the dishwasher and beyond.

I wish my husband would take charge of all things involving dishes.

My husband is king of all laundry. Apparently, I don’t do it right… which is FINE by me 😉

Ha! I am very particular about the way things get placed in the dishwasher.

Oh, man! I wish mine would do the dishes. That is my least favorite chore.
Stephanie says
I really wish mine would DO anything at all besides work. He’s running out of clean clothes because he won’t put his in the hamper (and I refuse to wash them otherwise, Ha).
I think it’s awesome that he takes on this responsibility.

That’s funny! My husband rearranges things after I put them in the dishwasher, but it was never explained! cute post!

Awesome post. My hubby is the king of laundry (he does ALL the laundry), but he’s not too shabby at the dishes (we share that chore).

Ha! First, I love that you wrote about your husband’s quirks. Second, I love that you willingly abide by his rules!

We have been married for 42 years and FINALLY, my husband is helping with the dishwasher! Never give up…..they can help! I’d live with your husband’s rules – take it and be thankful! It didn’t take him as long to help as my husband in the dishwaher area. (LOL)

I LOVE this…I am so particular about how things are placed in the dishwasher. I always rearrange what my husband does, but learned not to complain to him, because I too am just so thankful that he puts them in!!!

Wow! He is truly King of the Dishwasher. (And I’m going to use some of his helpful hints.)

You’re so lucky! My husband is barely acquainted with our dishwasher and prefers to leave things on the counter for me to put away. UNLESS I have just run the dishwasher and it is still in drying mode. In that case, he opens it and crams dirty dishes into the clean ones.

I picked out the dishwasher, and my guy loads and unloads it. I like it just fine that way!

I actually do these things too…now I don’t feel like the only crazy person handling the dishwasher that way! 🙂
CM says
My DH can totally be picky like that too! But I don’t let it bother me because I know he means well 🙂

I couldn’t help smiling when I was reading this post. I think it’s cute that your husband has such an interesting quirk. It’s even cuter that you dubbed him King of Dishwasher as a response to his rules.
Now if only I can get my husband to do the dishes too….

I love it! I think you handled that situation perfectly. Made him feel like he was the dishwasher King, instead of some oddball. And now, you never have to do dinner dishes. Awesome!!
paige says
I love that he does the dishes and does them well. That is a wonderful trait in a man!
The Blue Zoo says
My husband washes them first too. I think thats pointless and refuse to wash dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. I wish my husband would do them more!

That’s good, two different characters should complete ! lol !
Wait until he is retired then he will tell you how you have to peel potatoes (in inches !!)

It’s great that you all worked out a system that avoids a potentially ongoing conflict – good for you!!
I don’t think your husband would approve of my dishwashing methods. Rule #2, in particular, gets broken all the time around here! I have a friend in San Diego who washed her dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. But if you’re going to go ahead and wash your dishes, then why put them in the dishwasher? They’re already clean!! 🙂
To each his own…at least when it comes to dishwashing preferences. 🙂

Your husband’s rules make sense. But having a King of the Dishwasher is definitely the best idea! Well done!
