My Book Tie-Ins of the Week:
If you have children that want to know where food comes from, How Did That Get in My Lunchbox? The Story of Food by Chris Butterworth is the book for you.
It highlights were all the food comes from in a child’s lunch. Foods like apple juice, chocolate chip cookies, bread, and tomotoes are covered.
JDaniel is very big into asking why and where right now. He loves to know all the steps it takes to make something and where exactly it comes from.
What did we do?
Field Trip to an Apple Orchard
We drove out to Nivens Farm about twenty minutes from our house. It was a cloudy day and the weather was cool and comfortable.
The trees were bursting with apples that hung low enough for JDaniel to pick them.
He loved twisting the apples off and putting them in his bucket.
My husband would be so proud of us. We washed of the apple JDaniel sampled from the bucket before he ate it. This handwashing station was the perfect height for him.
While JDaniel snacked, we wandered through the pumpkins.
When he finished his apple, we wandered around in the corn maze. We both loved the purple flowers that were growing right beside the corn.
After the maze walk, JDaniel needed to rest for a moment. This tube was the perfect spot to sit down and hang out for awhile.

There used to be a TV show on HGTV called “How’d that Get on My Plate?” that would be a great tie in with this book.

That’s so cool. Would love to do that with our wee one, D. I didn’t blog about it, but today at pre-school they are talking about (and I assume seeing/playing with) a rabbit. So last night I made it a point to read three books with rabbits in them. Have a super weekend!

Perfect weather for apple picking. I like that they were low enough that he could do the picking himself.

What a cute book idea and activities! I remember when I was teaching and had lunch duty – I almost fell over when a student asked where frech fries come from and I explained they were potatoes and he didn’t believe me. (Might I add he was in 6th grade…) I think we might be taking a trip to go pick apples or something in the future – such a fun trip that would be!

It looks like a fun day, and what a great book!
I grew up next to an apple orchard, and I still love this time of year. Apples taste so much better when I’ve picked them myself!

What a great meme! I definitely want to try to find that book now. I miss getting to go apple-picking like I did when I was a kid, but though Washington produces a ton of apples, all the orchards are on the other side of the mountains from us. Bummer. Will try to visit some of the other sites linked up to this for more fun activity ideas!
