When JDaniel was little, I shared the big mouth frog joke with him! He loved it so much I was asked to tell it over and over again. Recently I came across the book the Wide-Mouthed Frog. You may have already heard about it and read it to your children. It is a really fun pop-up book based on the joke.

If your children haven’t read the Wide-mouthed frog or heard the big mouth frog joke, you will totally want to share it with them. The joke was shared in a post called the big mouth frog joke. If you don’t own The Wide-Mouthed Frogbook, you will want to get a hold of a copy. It is so much fun.
When you have finished sharing one or both of them with your children, I am sure they will enjoy making this wide-mouthed frog flap puppet craft. Later they could have the puppet retell the joke or read the book.
Putting the Wide-Mouthed Frog Craft Together
You can print out this Wide-Mouthed Frog Printable Craft out on cardstock via a color printer. If you don’t have cardstock, you can print the frog’s face out on paper and glue it to a piece of posterboard. You or your children can then cut outside edge of the frog.
Your children can fold the frog in half hotdog style and the cut along the frog’s forehead and over its eyes. The top of the eyes can then be folded upward. It really helps them stand out.
Next, they can cut a rectangle out of a red metallic foam sheet. One of the ends can be rounded to make it look like a tongue. We kept our tongue in the frog’s mouth, but you could have it hang out.
Your children could add large wiggly eyes over the black pupils on the frog and black felt nostrils. They would both add texture to the craft.
Playing with the Wide-Mouthed Frog
You will hold the folded frog in the space between its eyes to make its mouth open and close. Before they try to retell the joke or read the book, your children will want to practice making the frog’s mouth open and close.
