My Book Tie-Ins of the Week:

Amazon.com: The First Day of Winter (9780312371388): Fleming ...

The first day of winter was last month, but I was all caught up in Christmas when winter started and I hadn’t discovered this book. The First Day of Winter by Denise Fleming is a wonderful book with text based on the twelve days of Christmas. Each day a snowman is given something new to decorate him.

The snowman gets a red hat with a gold button on down to ten peanuts for toes. He is very dapper and well decorated by the time the book is done. The repetitive nature of the text made it easy for JDaniel to jump in and recite the text as I read it. It was fun to sing along with too.

Retelling the Story

We had a great time retelling the story as we assembled all the snowman decorations. The crayons represent things we drew on the snowman using that color.

Craft

We assembled the snowman. Our snowman had some bits and pieces in different locations than the one in the book.

Creative Play

This was the only snowplow my street saw during the snowstorm.

My Book Tie-Ins of the Week:

Snow by Cynthia Rylant describes snow this way it comes softly in the night like a quiet friend” or falls so “heavy [it buries] cars up to their noses. The story describes all types of snow and shares a grandmother and her granddaughter enjoying the snow by sledding, making snow angels, and more.

I love the illustrations by Lauren Stringer that are filled with joy and paint beautiful images that fit perfectly with Cynthia Rylant’s words.

Snow Sensory Box

JDaniel used his chopsticks to give snowballs a haircut.

He went on to shovel the snow.

Outdoor Cleaning

JDaniel and the next-door neighbor Nathan dusted off all the lawn furniture and railings on the deck.

Snowflake Quesadilla

After all the time outside, I made snowflake quesadilla for us to share. It was so easy to cut out a tortilla and warm it on the stove along with the second one in a frying pan with olive oil. Once both tortillas were browned I placed turkey and cheese between the tortillas.

My Book Tie-Ins of the Week:

Calendar by Myra Cohn Livingston walks you through the events and activities that go on each month of the year. The main character is set in beautifully illustrated backdrops that fill each page of this book. Oh! There are also wonderful rhymes to go along with them.

What did we do?

Calendar Number Identification

We searched for times the numbers 0-9 appear on a calendar page.

Calendar Counting

We rolled a giant die and looked for the number that came up on the die.

Calendar Celebration Stickers

We place stickers on the important holidays that will come up during the year so JDaniel will have a visual reminder to look at. We also decorated squares that contain family member’s birthdays. JDaniel chose to decorate some of the stickers to make them more festive.

Board book A Wish to Be a Christmas Tree Book

A Wish to be a Christmas Tree is a wonderful book about a tree that finds out he has a purpose all year long. What fun it is to be so helpful to others all during the year and not just look pretty at Christmas time.

What did we do?

Thank You Notes Using Hand Tracings

I trace JDaniel’s hand in a thank you note as his signature. I was reading about reusing wrapping paper on Red Ted’s Art Blog to make thank you notes. It gave me the idea to trace JDaniel’s hands onto wrapping paper and add the hand cutouts to the thank you notes I need to send to relatives to thank them for his gifts.

Christmas Card Puzzles

I love reusing Christmas cards. Last year we created a picture walking book using some of the cards. We would look through the cards and talk about what we saw in each picture. This year found a great post on Nurture Store called Christmas Card Games. It talked about making puzzles with Christmas cards. I just cut a few of the cards to make puzzles. JDaniel really enjoyed them.

Christmas Tree Memories by Aliki is a book that highlights the memories a family has about many of the ornaments on their tree. They remember when they made some of them and they remember the people that have given them others. I was amazed at the variety of types of ornaments they made. Someday I would love to make each one with JDaniel.

What did we do with it?

Homemade Ornaments

Christmas Ornaments Hung From the Cupboards with Care

JDaniel and I make salted flour dough and rolled it out. Then we took turns using the cookie cutters to cut out the ornaments.

We kept some of the dough white. We colored some of the dough a variety of colors. I really like the marbleized effect.

JDaniel loved playing with the extra dough. He played with it for over an hour.

My Book Tie-Ins of the Week:

Shannon of Milk and Cuddles sent JDaniel this book as part of the Christmas Book Exchange. Room for a Little One is a sweet story about a kind ox that has room for everyone animal that comes to his stable seeking a place to rest. The pictures in this book are beautiful. I love to just flip through and look at the illustrations. A pretty as the pictures are it is the message of this book that is the most beautiful. There is room for everyone in the stable. Jesus himself found a place to rest his head in a warm bed of straw in this stable one cold winter night.

What did we do with this book?

Retelling

First, we sorted through cookie cutters to find the animals from the story. We didn’t have cutters for all the animals. Some of the animals had to be modified to make all the right animals when I traced them on paper. We didn’t have a mouse so I reworked a rabbit into a mouse when I traced it.

I held up the animals and JDaniel held the flashlight as we retold the story with shadows.

Then I retold the story a second time and JDaniel pointed the flashlight at the right animal.

Story Comparision

We read Around the Farm by Eric Carle and talked about what animals were the same in both books and which were different. We used the animal silhouettes as reminders of what animals had been in the Room for a Little One.

My Book Tie-Ins of the Week:

I love What is Thanksgiving! by Michelle Medlock Adams. It explains to children that Thanksgiving is not about parades, football, and food. It is about being thankful and giving thanks. I love parades and food. I will watch football games. Giving thanks and being thankful is really how I hope I spent the day.

JDaniel and I made a turkey puppet with a head that could wag side to side and up and down. As I read him What is Thanksgiving!, I had him nod the turkey’s head yes for what Thanksgiving was about and no for things it is not about.

We made Turkey bowling pins for fun. I found a pattern for making napkin rings and modified it to create the bands around these old bottles. The feathers are tracings of JDaniel’s hands.

JDaniel loved setting them back up.

Ordinary Oscar by Laura Adkins reminds its readers that it is okay to be you. Oscar wants to be famous. He is bored with his color, his night eating, and sleeping during the day. He gets a Fairy Godsnail to grant him three wishes. He gets each of them. The final wish is the only one that truly makes him happy. It isn’t the wish to look stupendous and spectacular that makes him happy. It isn’t the wish to be huge that fulfills his dreams. Can you guess what it is? Did you guess that he wanted to be ordinary again? If you did, you were right!

The Bear with Sticky Paws Goes to School by Clara Vulliamy is about a little girl named Lily who doesn’t want to go to her school. It is boring. When she goes to visit Sticky Paws school she realizes, she misses the routine of her school. Sticky Paw’s school is filled with chaos, messy play, and a little counting. He only wants to play and do work that focuses on him. Lily learns a wonderful lesson about school routines and in the end finds a friend who loves her school too.
