Debugging Computer Code Algorithm Activity Pages

Debugging computer code will allow an algorithm or series of steps of code to run and complete assigned tasks. While debugging can mean removing mistakes, it can be so much more than that. Debugging computer code could also mean adding missing steps. However, it could mean reordering your code so the step will be in the correct order.

This Going Around a Flower Algorithm Pages set invites children to read an algorithm or series of arrows. Next, they look to see what parts of it may need to be debugged. Then your children will do one of two things. One of the things they will need to do is draw arrows on the board using the parts of the algorithm above that work and make changes where they need to. The other thing they will need to do is draw the arrows under the board facing the direction they will need to go around the board.  It doesn’t matter which part of the activity you decide to do first.

Deciding The Order of the Activity’s Steps

If your children are abstract learners, they may want to do the arrows on the line first. They can visualize where the arrows will go and how they need to face them. Concrete learners will need to draw the arrows on the board first. After drawing the arrows on the board, they will be ready to draw them on the line in the correct order.

Wait! Children could draw an arrow and then record it on the line, couldn’t they? Yes, they could. The algorithm or series of steps you use for this activity is really up to you.

Exploring the Debugging Pages

There are three different levels of debugging pages. There are simple pages with only a few squares. These would be great to introduce debugging or with younger children. The middle level has a few more squares. It will be more challenging for children. The last pages feature more squares and a few more barriers. They will be great for older children or children what have an understanding of debugging.

I Spy Bees with Feelings Activity Pages

Feelings activity pages can open the door for children to talk about their feelings. They can sometimes identify the feelings a picture or character has more easily than they can their own. While this printable set could be used just as an I Spy activity, it can be used to do more than that. They can be used as part of a discussion about feelings with your children.

Exploring the Activity Pages

Before starting either of the pages, children can go through the feelings flashcards that come with the set. The feelings displayed on each card can be shared and talked about. Children can try to replicate the feelings displayed on their faces. After that, they can share events that might lead to the bee feeling the way that it does. While some children can share times that they have felt that feeling, others may not feel comfortable doing that. Using their own experiences and applying them to a bee may be more comfortable for some children.

Once you have discussed the feelings, you can have your children explore the pages. One page invites children to record how many times they find each feeling with tally marks. The other page asks children to write a number that represents the number of times.

Hint:

Children may have trouble remembering if they have already counted a bee. After finding a bee with a specific feeling, they could color that bee or place an X on it.

Exploring the Shapes Mats

There are a number of ways to explore the set of mats.

  • They can be used in a center or with a whole group.
  • Next, they can be used in a free exploration or to do non-standard measurements.
  • The mats can be filled with objects that are that shape or be taken a shape scavenger hunt.

Exploring the Counting Bees Algorithm Game Boards

Before having the students start with the game boards let them know that there are a number of ways to complete the game boards. If you have a specific path you want them to use, you can walk them through the build. If you want to leave it open-ended, that is fine too.

  • First, you can work through a part of a game board with your children. It will help them understand how to place the arrows in the boxes. Remember that the arrows they draw should point in the direction they will need to go to move from the box they are in into the next box to connect the numbers in order. They need to begin at the word Start and finish in the box that will lead them to the End box.
  • Second, children can work with a partner to complete the gameboard. They can take turns placing the arrows or flies in the squares.

Yesterday I shared a fun LEGO themed post on building letters with LEGO light sabers. Today I have a fun post on bees. We have crafted bees before, but never added with them.  Our fun bees made from black and yellow LEGO are just perfect for an addition activity. I created Counting Bees printable math worksheets that the bees can be used on to create addition facts. There is one that focuses on adding two numbers and one that works on adding three numbers. If you don’t want to create bees with linking blocks, a set of bees are available in the printable pack.

Games You Can Play

There are lots of different ways to use Counting Bees math worksheets.  Here are several that I thought of.

Game One

One child can roll the dice and build a number sentence with the numbers on the dice and its sum of the Counting Bee printable math worksheets.

Game Two

One child can roll the dice, display the number sentence with bees, and the record the number sentence  and its sum on paper.

Game Three

Two children can play the game. They can each take turns rolling the dice and building the number sentence with bees. With two children working together one will be able to check the others work and make sure the sum is correct.

Game Four

Two children can play the game. They can work together create the number sentence. One child can roll the dice and the other can build the sentence. Once they have agreed on the sum, they can switch jobs.
