stART- Earth Day Related Books and a Craft

We read the following books that relate to Earth Day this week:

My Forever Dress by Harriet Ziefert is a wonderful book about a little girl whose grandmother reuses fabric from her favorite dress to make new clothing for her. In the end, she has to hand down the final dress to a cousin.

Barn Savers by Linda Oatman High is a great book about a father and his son who salvage wood and many other elements of old barns. This book paints great word pictures of what is going on while they work on one particular barn during the day. JDaniel loves this book.

Recycle Every Day by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace is another great book. It takes a little bunny through a week on watching how her family recycles. The little bunny has to decide what family does that she wants to illustrate for a poster contest at school.

The craft we did was a collage. (Yes, we did a collage last week too.) JDaniel was given triangles and squares from old wrapping paper to create his collage. It was fun to use the old paper in the project.

Shearing or Plucking A Sheep

When I visit the other Muffin Tin Monday blogs, I get to see some of the crafts they do as a part of a group called Tot School. They always look great and fit a theme each mom has picked for the week. Since I am focusing on lions and lambs this week, I thought I would have JDaniel make a lamb with cotton balls and a paper plate on Sunday night.

JDaniel was excited about doing a project. He carefully placed each cotton ball on the plate after I put a dab of glue on it. JDaniel rushed in the kitchen to show my husband when he was done. They hung it on the refrigerator in a prominent spot that was easy for him to see.

Monday morning the lamb was brought into the living room and placed on the coffee table. Then the shearing or plucking of the lamb began. JDaniel slowly pulled off all the cotton balls and placed them on the table. When he was finished, he walked away.

I asked him if he wanted to glue the cotton back on the plate. JDaniel told me, “No.” It was a fun and cute craft while it lasted.

I learned two lessons. One enjoys the process of making the craft. Two hang craft projects up high on the refrigerator.

Two Songs About Martin Luther King and a Craft for Children

Martin Luther King’s birthday is this week. I thought I would share two songs for children I found on the internet about him and a wonderful art project my nephew Charlie did in preschool to celebrate his birthday.

Here is the wonderful craft:

Charlie and his classmates put handprints on each person’s paper to create unity ring of many skin tones. Then they played this beautiful dove in the center of the ring.

Chistmas Painting with Bingo Markers

JDaniel and I stamped circles using bingo markers on these holiday coloring pages. Can you tell he gained more and more control over the bingo markers as we progressed from the Christmas tree to the stocking?
