Find, Count and Create a Bar Graph with Ocean Objects Printables

This week I will be sharing ocean themed math printables with you. Today’s activity invites your children at home or students at school to find and count ocean objects. Then they are asked to create a bar graph using the data they have collected. Later in the week, I have a printable ocean counting book to share with you. We will end the week with ocean themed number bingo boards. It should be a fun week.

At the end of each post, I will be sharing with you wonderful ocean themed learning printables from 3 Dinosaurs and Royal Baloo. I know you are going to want to check them out.

Find, Count and Create a Bar Graph Activity

Getting Ready for the Find, Count and Create a Bar Graph Activity

The first thing you will need to do is download the Find and Count Ocean Activity. You will find four different find and count sheets with matching graphing pages. Then your children or students can do some or all of the activity sheets. If you are not yet working on graphing and just want to work on counting, you can just print out the find and count sheets.

Using the Find and Count Sheets

The directions invite children to find out how many of each object is displayed on the page. Then children are asked to record how many they have found at the bottom of the page.

If you are worried your children may lose count, you can have them cross out, color, or place a number of each object as they count it.

Using the Create a Bar Graph Pages

While these pages were designed to record the date children have gathered on the find and count sheets. You could have your students come up with their own data and graph it.

How to generate different data?

Your children could roll a die for each ocean object. Then they could record the number on die by filling in bars on the bar graph.

Ocean Themed Counting Worksheets to Use with LEGO

Last week I started sharing some ocean themed printables with you. Today I have some ocean themed counting worksheets to share with you. They were designed to be used with LEGO, but you could easily use a variety of counting materials with them. You will find a list of counting materials listed later in this post.

Ocean Themed Counting Worksheets

Getting the Ocean Themed Counting Worksheets Ready

The first thing you will need to do is print out the Ocean Themed Counting Worksheets. You don’t have to print out the whole set. If you like you can print out just a few number mats at a time.

The mats are really colorful! You will want to print out the ocean themed counting worksheets on a color printer.

Gathering LEGO

You will need to a variety of different types of bricks for these worksheets. The long bricks work best for the Tally Marks section. You can use any type of bricks you like in the Number of Bricks section.

Other Counting Materials

If you would rather not use LEGO for this activity you could use any of the following:

Exploring the Counting Worksheets

You will want to have your children read the sentence at the top of each worksheet. Then you will want them to count the ocean pictures displayed. The mat for the number nine doesn’t say how many strands of seaweed are displayed. I thought it would be fun to have one of the counting worksheets ask children just to count the pictures.

After figuring out the number they are exploring on that counting worksheet, they will need to put the right number of narrow LEGO in the Tally Mark section. Then they can put the right number of bricks in the Number of Bricks section.

Children can check their work by placing the LEGO from one section at a time onto the ocean pictures.

You probably have a collection of small lids, caps, bread tags, and other small treasures that could have been put in your recycling bin, but kept them to use later. Here are some Earth Day math activities that give you the opportunity to use them. Each of them uses a set of Recycling Bin Counting Number Printables and your collection of treasures.

If your children are not familiar with Earth Day or recycling, you will want to read them the book The EARTH Book or one of the other books listed at the end of this post. They will give them some background on both topics.

Getting Ready

Before you start the Earth Day math activities you will need to print out the Recycling Bin Counting Number Printables and search for small items that your children can use to count with. If you have small lids, corks, bread tags or other small treasure, they would be great to use. If you don’t small pom-poms, buttons or bead would be fine to use.

Number Correspondence

Young children will need to start with one on one number correspondence. They will simply place the number of objects needed to match the number of each mat. You may want to put out just a few numbers at a time.

Number Order

You can put out all the mats in numerical order. Your children can move down the number line and add the right number of objects to each mat.

Find the Number

You can place the numbers around a room. Then you or your children can select a number to find. When they have found the number, they can place the correct number objects on it.

Kindergarten Math Worksheets – Penguin Number Activities

$Kindergarten Math Worksheets - This set contains a number line, number and picture cards, and muffin tin numbers.$

Earlier this week I promised to share activities using the penguin acorns I shared with you. Today I have two sets of kindergarten math worksheets and printables that would be great to use with the penguins.

While I am calling these kindergarten math worksheets, they could easily be used with younger and older children. You can use the activities I suggest or come up with activities of your own.

Kindergarten Math Worksheets

Muffin Tin Numbers

This set of Muffin Tin Numbers can be cut out and placed into a muffin tin. If you don’t have a muffin tin available, you could place the circle on a table or on a cookie sheet.

Number Counting

Your children can place the correct number of counters into each number cup. You can have them work from one to ten in number order or call out a number that the children need to look for.

Number Recognition

You can have your children drop a counter in each cup as they count from one to ten. Another way to have them work on number recognition is to have them select a number and find that number’s cup. Then they can place the number of counters in the cup that matches their number.

Number Line and Number Cards

The second set contains a number line and set of number cards. You can use the set on its own or with the muffin tin numbers. We have used them both ways.

On Their Own

Number Line Walking

Your children can count as they walk a penguin acorn or counter down the number line.

One to One Correspondence

Children can place the correct number of counters or penguins on each number card. Once they have the correct number of counters on the card, they can arrange the counters on top of the penguins. This will help them work on one to one correspondence.

With the Muffin Tin Numbers

Using Number Cards with Muffin Tin Numbers

You can stack the number cards in a pile. Then your children can take the top card from the pile and find that number in the muffin tin. They can place the counters into the cup that matches the number on their card.

Children can repeat this process until all the cards have been picked up from the pile.

Using the Number Line with Muffin Tin Numbers

Children can place a counter on the number line and then look for that number in the muffin tin. They can show that they have found that number by placing a counter or the matching number of counters into that muffin cup.

Graphing Practice Worksheet Collection- Snow Theme

I started the week by sharing a set of snowflake design printables that could be used to explore building snowflakes. Today I have a graphing practices worksheet collection for kids to share with you. It too has a snowflake theme. This set can be used as part of a graphing unit or as a book extension to do after reading a book like The Snowy Day.

Using the Graphing Practice Worksheet Collection

Creating a Graph

This collection can be used with a floor graph created on a large piece of cardboard or on the floor with tape. (We happened to have large cardboard box left over from a Christmas present delivery that worked out well for our graph.) painter’s tape was used to create the five column graph.

Painter’s tape was used to create the five column graph. (It is easy to move from cardboard and floors. We have used it a lot to create learning spaces.) We also put it on bottom and side edges on our graph to help define the graph’s boundaries.

Getting the Worksheet Pieces Ready

The graphing practice worksheets collection includes a spinner. You will also find a sheet filled with snowflakes of each design. There are five different snowflakes in the collection.

Creating the Spinner

You will need to print out the spinner pieces. Then you need to cut out each of the pieces. Finally, you will assemble the spinner.

Hint: We printed out our spinner pieces on printer paper and mounted them on card stock. If you want your set to be a little sturdier, you can print out your pieces on card stock.

Graphing Activity

There are probably many ways that you can use the graphing practice worksheet collection. I am going to share with you how we used it at my house.

All of the pieces were set on the floor. It was a nice day so, we took put the supplies on the floor of our deck. At the bottom of the graph, we placed one of each of the snowflake designs.

Then we took turns spinning the spinner. We placed a picture of the snowflake the spinner had landed on in the column above the snowflakes that matched it at the bottom of the graph.

After twelve spins, we decided to stop. You can spin the spinner as many times as you want.

Then we counted up the number of snowflakes in each column.

Finally, we search through our cookie cutters setto find the number that represented the number of snowflakes in each column.

I remember my mom reading my sister’s and I the book The Snowy Day. The boy in the book seemed to enjoy doing the same things we did in the snow. If you haven’t read them the book, you will want to look for it at the library. After reading the book to or with them, I thought your children might want to explore snowflake designs.

Did you know that snowflakes have six points and/or six sides like a hexagon? Did you know that snowflake designs are symmetrical? As your children explore building snowflake designs of their own, you will may want to share these fun facts with them. (My son seemed to soak up words like hexagon and symmetry when he was little.)

I have created three different outlines of snowflake designs and placed them in a PDF for you to use with your children. They can place a variety of objects on top of the designs to create fun snowflake designs or creations.

Fall Leaves Counting Activities with Printable

Last year I made cup wraps that could be used to play a backyard carnival game. I recently decided it would be fun to rework the single cup wrap into a series of wraps. Each wrap displays a number from one to ten. You will also find leaves that match each number on the wraps. While you could play a version of the backyard carnival game with the new Leaf Number Cup Wraps, there are so many more leaf counting activities you can play.

Counting Activities

Make a Number Line

You can have your children create a number line with the cups. You can have them start with the number 1 or any other number you like.

Fill in the Missing Number

You can set out the cups in number order. Then you can remove three or four of the cups. Your children can place the missing numbered cup in the space you created between the cups.

Knock Them Down and Say The Number

You can create a tower or pyramid with the number cups. It will be up to you to decide how high you want your tower or pyramid to go.

Then your children can knock down the tower or pyramid. You could have them use a bean bag or ball to knock it knock it down.

Then you can have your children tell you the number of each of the cups they have knocked over.

Object Counting

You can place out a complete number line of cups or pick a few numbers to work on. Then you will have your children place the correct number of pom-poms on each cup.

Build a Number or Fact Family

Your older children might enjoy building a number or fact family. They will need to select three cups that create a family. Then they will share the addition and subtraction sentences that fit in that family.

After stating all of the number sentences, they can build a pyramid or tower. Then they can knock it down.

Muffin Tin Skip Counting Sheets with a Leaf Theme

Earlier this week I shared with you Apple Basket Muffin Tin Numbers. That printable set was designed to focus on one to one correspondence and number recognition. Today’s skip counting sheets build on those concepts and introduce two more basic math concepts. Skipping counting and patterns in my mind are two skills that walk hand in hand. Kids have to figure out just how many numbers they will count by looking for the patterns.

Skip Counting Sheets Visual Clues

I designed these skip counting sheets to give children a number of visual clues. You can choose to share the clues with your children or have them discover them by themselves.

What are the visual clues?

The odd numbers all have the numbers on the left side of the leaf.

Yes, that means your children can find the even numbers on the left.

Your children will notice that the odd numbers have orange leaves.

They will also notice that the even numbers have yellow leaves.

Your children will see that every other column is made of the same type of leaf.

Finally, they will see that every other number in a row is the same.

You will need to download a copy of the Muffin Tin Skip Counting Sheets with a Leaf Theme for Kids . They were designed to fit into a muffin tin, but you can use them on a flat surface if you like. I liked the idea of keeping the counting objects contained.

You may be asking yourself why after drawing oak leaves I didn’t use acorns in this counting activity. While I have done acorn math activities in the past, I decided to avoid the whole are acorns safe discussion this time. If you want to use acorns with these skip counting sheets, please use them. There are a number of counting objects you can use for this activity. I went with small pom-poms.

We used homemade pinching chopsticks for the apple basket counting activity. You could use them for this activity or have your children make pincers with their thumbs and pointer finger.

Kids Math Games- Graphing Ocean Animals with LEGOS

$Kids Math Games- Graphing Ocean Animals with LEGOS$

This is one of those kids math games that can be played in the summer when we are thinking about the beach or as part of an ocean unit. Creating bar graphs with LEGOS is something we like to do. We have great a floor graph with tape and LEGOS. We have even created a graphing tool with LEGO and graphed with LEGO. For this kids math game we used a paper graph with ocean animals displayed on it, printable ocean animal cards, and LEGO. I want to make it more portable than the other kids math games.

Setting Up the Graphing with LEGOS Activity

You will need to print out Ocean Graphing with Blocks packet to start with. It contains the bar graph and the ocean animal cards. We printed out two pages of the ocean animal cards. It gave us more of a chance to graph more than two of each animals.

Then you will need to cut out the ocean animal cards. We just used scissors because that is what we had a home.

We placed all the ocean animal cards in a large mailing envelope. I wanted there to be enough room in the envelope to move your hand from top to bottom and side to side.

Graphing with LEGOS

Without looking into the envelope we picked 10 cards out. These became the cards we used to create the bar graph.

Next we decided what color LEGOS would represent each of the animals. You could decide this ahead of time for your children and just have eight of each of the colors available in a bowl.

Finally we placed the number of LEGO above each ocean creature that matched the number of cards we had selected. If you have young children, you will want to help them count out the correct number of LEGO and arrange them on the bar graph.

Kids Math Games with the Graph

This activity can end with creating the bar graph, but it doesn’t need to. I played a few kids math games with our graph.

Adding Animals

I asked my son to tell me what the sum of the starfish and the squid was. If you have younger children, you might phrase the question in more simple terms. You could say, ” How many starfish are there? How may squid are there? How many starfish and squid are there?” You can have your children touch each of the LEGOS above those animals as they count.

More or Less

I asked my son to tell me what two animals combined would be more than the number of shells. If you have younger children, you could ask them what animal has more blocks than the squid and which has less. You could make it simpler by asking which has the most and which has the least.
