Jack and the Beanstalk Muffin Tin Counting Set

The Jack and the Beanstalk Muffin Tin Counting set explores a number of themes from the story. Each theme has a paper muffin tin and muffin tin counting circles in B/W and color. The set comes with themed paper muffin tin as well as theme circles that can be put in an actual muffin tin.

Children can place each theme number circle on or in the muffin tin. They can use real objects instead.

Next, you decide which coloring page you want your children to work on.

Once you have printed out the gameboards, you gather crayons for your children to color their pages.

How to Use the Jack and the Beanstalk Muffin Tin Set

Printable vs. Real Muffin Tin

While the set includes printable muffin tins for number matching or counting, you could use actual muffin tins. One of the benefits of using an actual muffin tin is that the objects you use for counting don’t move off the numbers. However, the printable muffin tins were included so you would not have to find muffin tins to use for this activity.

If you decide to use a real muffin tin, you will print out one of the number circle sets to place in the muffin tin. You decide if you want to use the color or B/W version of the set.

Counting Activity

Children will place the correct number of objects into or onto each of the muffin tin numbers displayed. Below you will find objects that could be used with each theme.

Number Matching Activity

Children will need to place a numbered circle featuring objects of that number into or onto a muffin cup featuring that number. You can use the colored or B/W version in the muffin cups.

This Jack and the Beanstalk activity focuses on even and odd number beanstalks. Bean cards that feature numerals and number words come with the set. After selecting a few numeral or number word cards, children will place them on the even number or odd number beanstalk.

The set contains gameboards and number cards in color. You could print the cards out in grayscale if you like.

Deciding on Bean Card Sets

The even and odd number beanstalk set comes with numerals or number cards. There is also a number word set of numbers. One set of cards can be focused on while playing the game or both sets can be used. It is really up to you to decide which cards you want to use.

Ways to Use the Beanstalk Game

Children can sort the number onto the correct stalk in a center. Two children working together will be helpful. They will correct each other if they put the numbers on the wrong stalk.
Children can work on their own. They will probably need a chart reminding them of what numbers are even and what numbers are odd.
The game can be printed out on a poster printer. The large game board can be used as a whole group activity. Children can take turns placing a number on the correct beanstalk.

When you look over the pictures on the strips will find beanstalks, castles, golden eggs and so much more. Children will be asked to place objects of their choice in the same pattern displayed on the card.

Exploring the Jack and the Beanstalk Patterning Cards

The patterning cards can be placed in a center along with the objects you want children to pattern with. However, some children will just try to match the object with an object that is the same color. That means they aren’t figuring out the pattern.

Before placing them in a center, it might be helpful to work on the patterning cards with the whole class or small groups of children. It will give both you and your student time to talk about how to find a pattern. After finding the patterns, they can talk with you about how the pattern repeats on each card.

Jack and the Beanstalk Number Puzzles for Kids offer children the opportunity to explore number patterns and sequences. Children will explore the numbers from 1-10 by counting up and counting down. Skip counting by 2’s and 5’s puzzles are also in the set. These colorful puzzles will be fun to explore with your children.

Before Exploring The Jack and the Beanstalk Number Puzzles

It is important that your children understand how to sequence the numbers and skip counting patterns on the puzzles. Before using the puzzles, you may want to use a 100’s chart or number line to review the number sequence you are focusing on with your kids. Even if your children have appeared to master all the sequences it is great to see what they remember. 3 Dinosaurs has some wonderful number line bookmarks that would be perfect for reviewing.

Exploring the Puzzles

Children could glue the pieces to a piece of construction paper in order.
You can print them on the tag board and have your children work on them in a center.
You could laminate them and have your children work on them with a partner.
Children can place the pieces in order on a metal pan if they place magnets on the back of the puzzle pieces.

How to Use the Jack and the Beanstalk Themed Number Counting Gameboards

While there are many ways that you can use the gameboards, let me walk you through how I would use them with my students.

Begin by reading a traditional version of Jack and the Beanstalk.
Give each of your children the version of the gameboard you want them to work on along with a pencil.
Before starting the sequencing activity, you can have your children color the objects on the page if you like.
Have the children connect the box containing the word Start and Jack with his mom to the first object mentioned in the book (a bean) with an arrow.
Continue connecting the events and numbers in order.
After box ten is reached, draw an arrow from box ten the word End.

Wait! Isn’t This Like Building a Coding Algorithm?

Yes, it is. An algorithm is a series or sequence of steps that need to be completed in order. Sequencing the story events from Jack and the Beanstalk is very much like creating a coding algorithm. If the events are not in order, the story may not make sense.

Coin counting can be challenging. This set of Jack and the Beanstalk Coin Counting Pages from 3 Dinosaurs walks children through how to count coins.

Wednesday
