Christmas Counting Games- Peppermint Numbers

Last year I created a set of turkey numbers that could be used to play Thanksgiving counting games and adding the numbers 0-10. This year I have made two different sets of Christmas themed numbers. Along with the numbers each set has Christmas themed counters that can be for the Christmas counting games. Today I am going to share the Candy Cane Number Recognition Activity peppermint numbers with you. Later this week I will be sharing gingerbread themed numbers and candy counters.

The peppermint numbers come with counting holly leaves. If you think you need something little bit easier for your children to pick up, you could cut out holly leaves out of thick felt.

Below you will find some Christmas counting games you can play with your children. I am sure you will come up with a number of counting game of your own.

Counting Games

Number Order

You can have your children put the the candy themed numbers in order. You can decide if you want your children to start counting a 0 or 1. We tend to start counting at one at my house.

Sorting By Even and Odd

Children can place the even numbered peppermint numbers in one row and the odd numbers in another. Your children may want to add holly leaves to each of their numbers. It will help them to see that the even numbers have leaves that can be paired together. Odd numbers will have one leaf that doesn’t have partner.

Adding Numbers
This counting and adding game has children place the correct number of holly leaves on the two numbers being added. Children can pick up the leaves from the two numbers and place them on number that is the sum.

Learning to count to ten with tally marks will be really fun with these Candy Cane Tally Marks . They will look like Christmas and you will not be tempted to eat them.

There are so many different ways to explore and build numbers with them. Here are a few that I came up with.

Roll and Display Math Game

Children can roll a die and then display the number that appears on the top of it. We used a 10 sided dicethat displays the numbers zero to nine. If you have traditional dot dice with six numbers on them, you may want to play this with two die.

Call Out a Number and Show It Math Game

Children can do this activity with a partner. One person calls out a number and the second person has to display it.

Display It and Say It Math Game

Children can build a number with the peppermint sticks. Then they will need to say the number they have created.

You can make it more challenging by asking them to say the number that comes right before or right after it.

Build Even or Odd Math Game

Children can be asked to build an even or odd number. They can then explain what makes that number even or odd. I bet they will tell you that even numbers have buddy and odd numbers don’t.

Stocking Number Pick and Display Math Game

The number 1-10 can be placed slips of paper in a Christmas stocking. Children can be asked to pull a number out of the stocking and display it with the peppermint sticks.

If your children are ready to work with a number larger than ten, you can print out several peppermint stick tally mark sheets.

Star Wars Lightsaber Shape Craft

Last week I shared with you a Chewbacca shape craft that would be great fun to have your kids create. Today I want to share another shape craft with a Star Wars theme. Building a new Star Wars lightsaber like we did will be such fun to build. It is also a great opportunity for you to talk about using shapes to make new shapes with your kids.

All of the triangles in this craft were at one time the same size. The right triangles on the outside edges of the blade were made by cutting the center triangles in half. When we flipped the halves and placed them beside the center triangle they made square like shapes. (They don’t really look like perfect squares.)

This shape craft also includes three different four sided shapes. We took a moment to talk about how the trapezoid, rectangles and squares were alike and how they were different.You don’t have to stop to talk about the shapes as you create this Star Wars lightsaber. I tend to look for ways to incorporate building learning into crafts. It is a fun way to share vocabulary words and build on concepts kids have already learned.

We also used some silver scraps leftover from a lightsaber for a Yoda puppet craft to add texture this shape lightsaber. We used what we had a home for the blade of the lightsaber. You may decide you like the textured or glittery paper for the blade of the lightsaber. It would give this Star Wars craft a lot of pizzazz!

The ultimate goal of this craft was to explore shapes while creating something my son is interested in. He really loves Star Wars! If you have a Star Wars fan at your house, they will probably have fun making a Star Wars Lightsaber shape craft too.

Chewbacca Star Wars Shape Craft

A few weeks ago I shared with you a Chewbacca puppet. I recently came across a super cool Yoda shape craft on Toddler Approved. It got me thinking. Why not try to make a Chewbacca Star Wars Chewbacca craft with you! This craft focuses on using a variety of shapes to build Chewbacca.

Kids will be familiar with the square, rectangle, and triangle shapes used in this Star Wars craft. I am guessing that the trapezoid and hexagon will be new to them. Yes, the hexagon is elongated and even kids that know that shape might not recognize it. I didn’t want to pass up the chance to have to lesser-known shapes appear in this craft.

If I were having a group of children or was working one on one to craft Chewbacca together, I would take a moment to go over each of the shapes. I would have them help me figure out how many of each shape was being used in the craft. We might even graph the number of shapes used. That would make this a math and craft activity.

If I were placing this in a craft center, I would have a copy of the finished craft on display. I would probably have blocks in the shapes used in the craft out for kids to explore too.

I like to build crafts step by step with kids. It gives JDaniel and/ or my students the opportunity to talk about the building materials, shapes, and the process.

It also gives us the opportunity to talk about positional words like above and below. I am not talking about long discourses. I am just taking a few seconds or minutes to work on vocabulary and listening skills.

I have found that it helps build a moment of learning and not just a craft. There is nothing wrong with placing this craft in a center or a craft table and just building it. I just wanted to share how I have done it.

Counting Worksheets- Weaving a Web of Numbers

Creating a Number Web is such fun. Your children simply connect the numbers found on the sides of the spider. They will start with the number one and work their way up to the number ten. When they have connected all the numbers one to ten, they will have created a spider web.
There are many ways that children can connect the numbers to make their webs. Let me share with you a few of the ways I have thought of. After reading them over, I hope you will leave some ideas of your own in the comment section of this post.

Ways to Use the Counting Worksheets

Using a Writing Tool
Children can use crayons, a marker, colored pencil or number two pencil to connect the numbers. This is probably the fastest way to create a web. Children can use only one color to connect the numbers or a wide variety of colors.

If you laminate a set of counting worksheets, you children can use dry erase markers to connect the numbers.

Weaving with Yarn

If you print out the Creating the Number Web sheets on card stock, you can easily use yarn to connect the numbers. A hole punch can be used to place holes on the outside edge of each number. Then you simply tape the end of long piece of yarn on the back of the printable beside the number one hole.

Your children can put the yarn through the number one hole and place it down the hole by its matching number. Then they will weave the yarn up the number two hole and down the number two hole on the other side. They will continue to this process until all the numbers have been connected.

Wiki Sticks

If you laminate the Creating the Number sheet, you can have your children connect the numbers with Wikki Stix easily. They will be easy to place on the plastic covered web and taken off when they are done. We tried using the web uncovered and found they left a little residue.

Preschool Worksheets- Pumpkin Counting Book Printable

Last month I shared an apple seed counting book I created on Pre-K Pages. It went over so well there that I decided to make Pumpkin Seed Counting Book. The layout of this book is a little different than the apple seeds book. The space to work in is bigger. This version of a seed counting book has number sentence for children record their seed count on. The apple seed book pages displayed a preprinted number.

Children are still invited to record a number of seeds on each page with fingerprints. They are then supposed to write the number that matches the number of seeds that they have stamped.

Ideally students would work on the number one through ten sequentially to create a book. (That was my original plan.) Below you will find a list of others ways that you can use the pages of this book.

Other Ways to Use These Preschool Worksheets

Have a group of children work on creating the book. Each child would get one page to work on.
Have the children select the number they want to stamp on each page. The number of seeds in the pumpkin will still need to match the number they write down.
Have children doll a die. They will need to create fingerprints and write the number that matches the number they rolled.
Have the children use just one page laminated as a work mat. They can place as many buttons on the work mat as they please. They will then write down the total number of buttons in the seed sentence at the bottom of the page.

Halloween LEGO Candy Corn Challenge

I have candy corn on my brain lately. Earlier this fall I shared with you two fall festival games with fall-themed. There was one called “Candy Corn Color Match” and another called “Candy Corn Ring Toss”. Today I am going to share with you a Halloween LEGO challenge. Originally the idea was that my son would replicate a candy corn LEGO build I made. He decided he would issue me a challenge too.

My Halloween LEGO Challenge

After searching through our LEGO bucket to find all the orange , white, and yellow bricks, I built candy corn with some of them.

The remaining bricks were placed in my son’shardhat. (It was the closest toy to the brick bucket that could hold the bricks.) Then I asked my son to build candy corn that would be symmetrical to mine. Yes, it needed to be a perfect match in size and shape.

After looking through the bricks, he quickly realized that there were not the same amount of bricks in the same colors I had used. He would have to combine some smaller bricks to equal my larger bricks.

He kept holding his brick candy corn build up to the one I made to see if they matched. If they matched, they would be symmetrical.

More than once I noticed him counting the exposed bumps on my bricks to see if he had the same number.

This activity was super challenging, but it did make him think. He had to plan for ways to work around the fact that he couldn’t use the same bricks I did. If the build looked off, he had to decide what part of the candy corn needed to be rebuilt.

JDaniel’s Halloween LEGO Challenge

What I love best about this activity is that when he had finished building, he had me recreate the candy corn he had made. He then had control of all the available bricks. I had to quickly think about what bricks to use.

I really do mean quick. He decided one I had built his candy corn we need to race. We both took apart our candy corn and had to rush to try to rebuild it. Thankfully he chooses a simple build. Unfortunately, he has really fast fingers.

Second Grade Worksheets – Exploring a Number

My son has learned so many different ways to write or illustrate numbers in second grade. I thought it would be a lot of fun to create Second Grade Worksheets- Exploring a Number that would display a few of those different ways. I also included a box for him to tell me if a number is even or odd. It came out so well that I thought I would share one of them with you.

Since it is October I placed lines through the inside of a pumpkin. These lines created spaces that could be used to display the various ways a number can be written. Each space is labeled with the way he needed to write each number.

Some of the ways can be done super-fast and don’t take up much room. Others take longer. My son had to think about how to fit those displays of a number in the space given. Thankfully we did this worksheet in pencil. Writing the selected number in tally marks had to been rethought out. The tally marks were too far apart and had to been drawn in closer together.

We worked on the following:

Tally marks
Number in words
Number
Base ten blocks
Expanded Notation
Even or Odd

After making a colored pumpkin worksheet I made four other second grade worksheets. There are three fall themes in the set. I made a black and white version of the pumpkin, turkey and leaf. Just for fun there is a colored version of the pumpkin and turkey. Many of you will want to print out a copy of the colored versions if you don’t need a number of them. If you need a lot of copies of these second grade worksheets, the black and white versions are available.

If your children are working on different ways to display numbers, please feel free to add a new section to the pumpkin.

Your children don’t have to work on the same number. You can have them pick out their own one or two digit number.

Cool Painting Ideas- Exploring Symmetry

I have been dying to explore symmetry with JDaniel this summer so I put together a series of activities. This is the first activity in the series I will sharing with you. It involved painting with a mirror. The mirror allowed JDaniel to see what his painting would look like on both sides of a piece of tag board when we finished the project. As you will see later,what was done to one side of the paper will appear on the other. I think you will like the cool painting ideas we did to complete this project.

Cool Painting Ideas Supplies

The first thing that needed to be done was to take out all the supplies we would need.

Here is what we used:

card stock
silicone cups filled with tempera paint
dabbers made from buttons with pipe cleaners threaded through them (This is one of the cool painting ideas.)
binder clips
hand mirror

Directions for Symmetry Painting

We started by folding the card stock in half and setting in on a plastic place mat. (Plastic mats are a create table cover for painting projects.)

Then we put binder clips on the side of hand mirror. It was a little tricky to put the clips on and have the mirror balance.

While looking in the mirror to see how the painting was progressing, my son started to tap paint dots on the paper. (To keep hte colors from mixing we had a different paint dapper for each of the colors we used.) Dapping and later smearing paint with the button dappers looked like a lot of fun. I confess that I painted a few dots too.

After it was decided that enough painting was done, JDaniel unfolded the paper. The he refolded the paper to hide the painted dots on the inside of the paper.

The paper was then patted, tapped, and rubbed to transfer the paint to the blank side of the paper.

When the paper was opened up, we found an almost matching or symmetrical design. How well the paint transferred depended on the amount of paint initially applied. We decide that it look most symmetrical in the mirror.

It was so much fun to watch my son’s cool painting ideas appear in the mirror and on paper.

Counting Bees Math Printable

This math worksheet was created to work on math facts. First the dice are rolled to discover what numbers or numerals a child will be working with. Then LEGO bees representing each number are placed on a line before the equal sign. Finally the total number of bees are slid over to the sum line. Children can find the sum of the numbers they rolled by counting the bees on the sum line.

Place Value Pasta Printable

This set of place value pasta was created to go along with the book Noodle Man: the Pasta Superhero Different types of pasta represent ones, tens, and hundreds. There are ravoli hundreds, fusilli tens and noodle ones. Three dice were rolled to see what numbers would get to used to build a three digit number. Then what place each number would have was decided. That number was displayed and written down on a white board.

After hunting for eggs in the backyard, the egg shaped stickers they contained were used to solve math problems.

Printable Math Worksheet- Pumpkin Teeth

Yes, this game has dice too. This game is a number recognition game. The number on the first die is displayed as the pumpkin’s top row of teeth. The bottom row displays the number on the second die. With all the teeth in place it is time to find the sum.

Floor Graph Color Spinner

The math worksheet for this activity contains a spinner spot with three colors and an arrow. Each time a color had the arrow land on it a LEGO of that color was placed that color area on a floor graph. The arrow spun around a paintbrush. My son thought spinning was the best part of the activity.

Roll and Cover Addition Ladybugs

This addition game invites children to roll three dice and add them together. Once children have the sum they cover that number with a colored button. The goal is to cover each of the spots on the back on the ladybug.

Roll and Draw Leprechaun

Roll the dice to find out what type of each facial feature to add to the leprechaun. This is one of those interactive math worksheets that can be done individually or with friend.

Gold Coin Number Mats

Children can work on number recognition with these Gold Coin Number Mats. All they will need is a set of gold coins and a mat. Each mat has a set of yellow circles that math the number featured on them. Children will place a coin on each circle on each number.

This game is played the same way as the Ladybug Roll and Cover game. It would be great to work on while you are studying Dr. Seuss.
