Halloween Secret Code Words Printable Set

This set contains two pages of Halloween secret code words. After reading a clue a, children will search for the word or words in the word box that fits the clue. They might be fun to explore this set during a Halloween party or on the day of Halloween.

When children have finished finding all the words, they can decide if they can think of other clues for the words. It will be fun to see what your children can come up with.

Getting the Halloween Secret Word Printable Set

First, you will need to download the Halloween Secrete Word printable set.

Second, if you don’t have Acrobat Reader you will need to download it. This set is an Acrobat Reader PDF file.

Third, you will need to go to your download file and open the page. You may be asked if you want the file to open right after you download it. If you are, you won’t have to hunt for it in your download file.

What Does the Set Contain?

Creating Your Own Halloween Secret Words

Possible Halloween Secret Code Words

After exploring the secret code words in the set, you could create their own secret code words. Below you will find a list of words your children could use.

Creating Clues for Your Words

Once children have selected their words, they will need to come up with clues for them. Clues that are simple and not long are usually the easiest for people to understand. After writing down their clues, they are almost ready to share them.

Word Bank vs. Non Word Bank

The Halloween Secret Code Word set features word boxes. Your children don’t have to have a list or word bank for their clues if they don’t want to. By just saying it is a Halloween word the list of possible words in narrowed down.

If a word box or list isn’t used, it might be helpful for children to say how many letters are in the word or words. If the answer to a clue is two words, it would be a great idea to share that.

When they have filled in all the boxes for the letters under a riddle, they will discover the punch line of the riddle.

Binary Number Countdown Rockets

Your children will have fun exploring this set of binary number worksheets. One worksheet counts down from ten to one. The second worksheet in the set counts down from five to one. Whether you are teaching your children binary numbers or exploring number systems, these worksheets will be fun to work on. This set was not designed to explain how the binary number system works. It was designed to expose children to binary numbers.

What is a binary number?

It is the code used by a computer to understand letters, number, symbols, and commands. The code uses groups of 8 numbers or a byte to represent each letter, number, symbol, and command you type in on a keyboard. The only numbers that the computer can use to create the code are 0’s and 1’s.

Books About Rockets

Before you have your children work on the countdown rocket worksheets, you may want to read them a book about rockets and counting down. Below you will find some of my favorites.

Getting Ready to Explore the Worksheets

First, you will need to download your free set of the Binary Countdown Rockets worksheets.

Next, you will need to decide whether you want your children to work on the numbers from one to five or one to ten.

Then you can print out as many of worksheets as you need for your children.

Exploring the Binary Number Worksheets

You can have your children work on the worksheets on their own, in a pair or in a group. If you are having younger children work one of the countdown worksheets, you may want to help them write down each of the binary numbers. Each binary number has a string of zeros in front of it. Your children may have trouble remembering how many zeros they need to include.

Your children will have fun exploring the binary code alphabet chart on this binary code for kids worksheet. They will need to use the chart to find the eight digit code for each of the letters in the word love. This would be a great activity to do on or before Valentine’s Day.

What is a Binary Code?

It is the code used by a computer to understand letters, number, symbols, and commands. The code uses groups of 8 numbers to represent each letter, number, symbol, and command you type in on a keyboard. The only numbers that the computer can use to create the code are 0’s and 1’s.

First, you will need to download Binary Code for Kids – Spelling Love worksheet.

Second, you will need to open the worksheet set in Acrobat Reader.

Third, you will need to print out one worksheet for each of your children. You will notice that the set includes an answer key.

Exploring Coding Before Starting the Activity

Below you will find some wonderful books that talk about coding for kids.

Working on Spelling Love in Binary

First, you will want your children to search the binary alphabet chart at the bottom of the worksheet to find the numeric code for each letter. (You may want to let them know that the codes they are working with represent capital letters. Lowercase letters have a slightly different binary code.)

Once they placed each letter’s 0’s and 1’s on the lines, they are ready to move on to coloring the circles next to the code. They will leave all the circles that represent 0’s empty. The circles that represent 1’s will be colored in. Why? A computer uses a group of eight switches to send a binary code. The switches can be turned on or be left off. Each 0 in a binary code represents a switch left off. Each 1 represents a switch turned on. Your children will create a visual of the switches turned on or left off for each letter.

Turkey Coloring Pages and an Algorithm Activity

Last week I shared with you a set of Thanksgiving coloring pages and algorithm activities. Due to the number of steps in the algorithms, older children will probably enjoy them more than younger children. Younger children will enjoy this turkey coloring pages and algorithm set. The first turkey coloring page walks children through how to make a simple turkey. The second coloring page invites children to illustrate a scene from the book A Turkey for Thanksgiving by Eve Bunting. If you are participating in the Hour of Code, these coloring pages will introduce your children to coding.

If your children haven’t heard or read the book A Turkey for Thanksgiving, you will want to share it with them. It brings new meaning to having a turkey for Thanksgiving. Your children will love how the dinner turns out. I love to read a book to my children based on an activity we are going to do.

Before Starting the Algorithm Activity

You will need to print out one or both of the turkey coloring pages from the Turkey Coloring Pages and Algorithm Activities. They will download as a PDF. You can open it up with Acrobat Reader.

If you are having your children work on A Turkey for Thanksgiving coloring page, you will want to read them the book. You will also want to have them brainstorm what kinds of messages they want to display on their signs.

If your children are working on drawing a turkey algorithm, you may need to share with them what a wattle is. They may not be familiar with that term.

Starting the Turkey Coloring Pages

You will need to share with your children that an algorithm is the series of steps a computer works through to complete a task. They will be working through an algorithm displayed on Blockly blocks. (Blockly blocks are a coding tool created by Google. Blockly blocks are used by a number of Hour of Code sites including Code.org.) It will be great for them to know they are used on computers and not just displayed on these coloring pages.

Then you can walk your children through what they need to do on blocks one block at a time.

Pool Noodle Ideas – Building Letters in Binary Code

Each summer I like to share pool noodle ideas with you. Previously I have shared a pool noodle shark craft, a pool noodle airplane that actually flies, and an addition fact activity. Today I have an activity for your that combines binary code and the letters of the alphabet. (I will be sharing it at a session of a technology conference I will be presenting at in July focusing on learning to code offline.) Your children will have fun exploring it too.

What is Binary Code?

It is the code used by a computer to understand letters, number, symbols, and commands. The code uses groups of 8 numbers to represent each letter, number, symbol, and command. The only numbers that the computer can use to create the code are 0’s and 1’s. The blue pool noodle sections will represent the 0’s and the red sections will represent the 1’s.

Getting the Pool Noodle Sections Ready

You will need to cut 1-inch sections out of a red and a blue pool noodle. Each of your children will need eight poodle sections in each color. A serrated knife will probably be the easiest knife to cut with.

It is totally okay if each of the sections isn’t cut into perfectly flat on the top and bottom. The key is to try to make them as close to 1-inch tall as possible.

Getting the Binary Code Letter Cards Ready

You will need to print out a set of Pool Noodle Ideas -Building Letters in Binary Code cards for your children to explore. The cards were designed to be printed out in color onto cardstock. If you want each of your children to work on the same letter at the same time, you will want to print out a set of building letter cards for each of your children.

Once you have printed out the set, you will need to cut each card in half. You will notice that there are two letter cards on each page.

Exploring the Binary Code Letters with Pool Noodle Sections

As you children work on each letter, they will need to lay out the pool noodles in the pattern shown on the card. You will want to check each of their noodle codes to make sure that they match the ones on their card.

Once they have completed a letter, they can move on to another letter. If they didn’t start with the letter that starts their name, you may want them to work on that one next.

Whether you are celebrating National Donut Day or your children just love to crack the code activities, this free printable will be fun to explore. It features words related to donuts. Your children will have fun guessing what each word is as they start to crack the code.

Getting the Crack the Code Activity

This crack the code set includes one decode the code worksheet and an answer key worksheet. After you download the Donut Themed Words Crack the Code Activity, you can print it out on a black and white printer.

Before Starting the Donut Activity

Your children will enjoy reading a book about donuts. Below you will find several wonderful books about donuts. I think your children will love them. After reading one or two of these books, your children will have a lot of donut themed words on their mind.

Exploring the Donut Themed Crack the Code Activity

The first thing you will want to do is to have your children brainstorm words that they think relate to donuts. It will be fun to see if the words your children brainstorm appear on the worksheet.

Next, you will need to decide if you are going to work on the worksheet as a group, in pairs or on your own. If your children are young, you will want to work on this in pairs or as a group. It will help children decode the words.

Finally, you will want to go over the crack the code words to figure out if your children have decoded them correctly.

This is the final printable set in this week’s decode this code series. It is the second cowboy themed printables set. As I mentioned earlier in the week, JDaniel is going to a wild west theme Cub Scout camp this summer. This decode this code set and the set that focuses on cowboy themed words will be used when a group finishes an activity early and needs something to do for a few minutes.

Your children can also use this activity to work their oral reading skills. They will have fun reading you each riddle and its punchline. It will be fun to see which of the riddles they like best.

Cowboy Themed Book

Before you start the activity sheets, you might want to read your children a cowboy themed book or tow. Here are some books that would be fun to read to them.

Exploring This Decode the Code Activity

First, you will need to decide if you want your children to figure out the punchlines to the riddles on their own, with a partner or a small group. Younger children would probably benefit from working with an adult partner or a small group. They may need help finding each letter on the chart and knowing how to form each letter.

Then you need to decide if you want them to read the riddle out loud before working on its punchline or after they have decoded the code. Each riddle contains context clues that will help them understand the words they are decoding. I would vote for reading the riddle before decoding it.

Finally, you will want your children to read the riddles and their punchlines out loud. Please invite your children to add inflection to their voices as they read them. It will make each of the riddles more exciting and help give emphasis to keywords in each joke.

This is the 4th of 5 printable crack the code sets I am sharing this week. Your children will enjoy finding out the punchlines for jokes on worksheets in this set 4th of July themed jokes. They feature picnic and patriotic themed secret codes for kids to decode. When they have finished breaking each of the codes they will have fun sharing the jokes with their friends and family.

Before your children start exploring the secret codes for kids worksheets, you may want to read them one of the patriotically themed books below.

Getting the Secret Codes for Kids Printables

You will need to download the secret codes for kids printables. There are two worksheets and two answer keys in the 4th of July Jokes and Secret Codes for Kids .

Then you will need to print out the worksheet or worksheets you want your children to use. They were designed to be printed out on a black and white printer.

Exploring the Worksheets

Your children can work with a partner or on their own to crack the secret code for each of the patriotic jokes. You will find that some of the punchlines are funnier when your children read them aloud. After decoding each of the punchlines, you will want to have them read them to you. They can practice adding inflection to their voices when they get to the key areas in each of the jokes.

A number of the jokes have puns or plays on words in them. You will want to stop and talk with your children about what each punchline means in the context of the jokes. Then you can help them to figure out what they mean in a 4th of July context.

This week 3 Dinosaurs and I are sharing farm themed printables. Most of the printables you will get from me are STEM-related. Yesterday I shared a printable that walked kids through how to make balance scale. There was also a recording printable where kids could record how much two plastic chickens weighed in corn. Today’s activity invites children is a set of farm jokes coding breaker game worksheets. Your children will have fun finding the answers to the jokes on each of the worksheets.
